Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Outlasts Towson in Regular-Season Finale, 68-52

ELON, N.C.- Ending its regular season on a high note, the Elon University women's basketball team defeated Towson at Schar Center on Saturday, March 7, 68-52.

"We locked in and accomplished two of our goals, rebounding and holding them below 40 percent," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "On both ends of the spectrum, we did really well. Then, it's icing on the cake when your offense is clicking."

THE RUNDOWN
Kayla Liles ignited a 9-0 run to put the Phoenix up 9-3 early on, scoring seven of the team's points. Towson then answered with a 12-3 run of their own to take a 15-12 lead going into the second quarter.

After ending the half with a 29-27 lead, the Phoenix went on a 7-0 run midway through the third to give Elon a double-digit advantage. Following a pair of free throws from Liles, a shot from deep by Jaylin Powell, and a jumper from Maya Johnson, the Phoenix grew its advantage to 13 (42-29) with 3:50 in the clock. Elon kept its lead in the double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Elon took its largest lead of the game late in the fourth quarter (21). With the score 61-45, a three ball from Ariel Colón and a Brie Perpignan jumper put the Phoenix up 66-45. As time ran out, Powell then went on to score the final two Elon points of the afternoon to give the Phoenix its final score.

HIGHLIGHTS
-Colón paced the Phoenix, totaling 17 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career. Liles followed with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor with 12 of them coming in the first half.
-Towson's Q. Murray and Kionna Jeter were the team's double-digit scorers. Murray tallied a team-best 13 points while Jeter finished just one point behind her with 12. Nukiya Mayo also chipped in nine points in addition to a game-best six steals.
