ELON, N.C. – Continuing its three-match road swing, the Elon University men's soccer team heads to No. 25 West Virginia for a matchup with the Mountaineers on Saturday, Oct. 23. Start time of the match is at 2 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The Matchup
• Saturday marks the first meeting between the two schools since the 2014 season. Elon is unbeaten versus the Mountaineers with a 2-0-2 record in their all-time meetings.
• The Phoenix has won the last two matchups over the Mountaineers including a 1-0 result the last time the two teams met in 2014 at Rudd Field.
• Elon's last visit to West Virginia came in 2012 with the Phoenix coming away with a 3-2 win over the 18
th-ranked Mountaineers.
Last Time Out
• Elon began its three-match road trip at Colonial Athletic Association opponent Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 16. The Phoenix rallied from a 2-0 first-half deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against the Huskies for its 11
th point of the CAA season.

Calle Edelstam and
Jalen Weatherspoon scored the two goals for the Phoenix with Edelstam connecting on his second goal in as many games while Weatherspoon entered the scoring column for the first time this season.

Cam Pelle made a career-high eight saves in goal after coming in off the bench in the 15
th minute. The eight saves are the most for a Phoenix netminder in a single game since Nathan Dean had nine versus William & Mary in 2013.
Competitive Slate Ahead
• Elon is amid a competitive slate of games on its schedule, facing two teams that are ranked in the current United Soccer Coaches Top-25 poll in No. 3 Duke and No. 25 West Virginia. The Phoenix is also set to face Hofstra next Saturday, Oct. 30, with the Pride currently ranked 19
th in the poll.
• The Phoenix also faced off against UNCW, who was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll its matchup against the Seahawks on Oct. 9.
About Elon
• The Phoenix (6-5-2, 3-1-2 CAA) sits second in the CAA standings with its 11 points, only a point behind James Madison. Hofstra and Northeastern are tied for third with 10 points each.
• Elon has scored six goals in the past two games in its 4-3 win over UNCW and its 2-2 draw at Northeastern. In the five games prior to UNCW, the Phoenix had scored only three total goals.

Jack Edwards leads the Phoenix with his five goals on the year. The Oak Ridge, N.C., native also leads the Phoenix with 17 shots and ranks second in the CAA in game-winning goals with three.

Peter Wentzel is third in the league in shutouts per game at .455 and goals-against average at 1.02. The redshirt junior is also third in the CAA in save percentage .773.
Scouting West Virginia
• The Mountaineers (7-2-4, 1-1-1 CUSA) are ranked 25
th in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll as released on Tuesday, Oct. 19. West Virginia is coming off a 1-0 setback at No. 4 Kentucky on Tuesday in its most recent contest.
• A member of the Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) in men's soccer, the Mountaineers have a 1-1-1 ledger in conference play. West Virginia was tabbed as the league favorite in the 2021 Preseason Poll.
• The Mountaineers have scored 20 goals this season while conceding only nine so far in 2021. Senior forward Yoran Popovic paces the squad with four goals and 21 total shots.
• In goal, fifth-year keeper Steven Tekesky ranks 12
th in the nation in total shutouts with six. He has posted a GAA of 0.64 with a .757 save percentage.
