Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Elon Falls at No. 25 West Virginia, 3-1

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Three unanswered goals in the second half were too much to overcome for the Elon University men's soccer team as the Phoenix suffered a 3-1 setback at No. 25 West Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The Phoenix moved to 6-6-2 overall with the loss in its second-to-final nonconference match of the season. The Mountaineers improved to 8-2-4 overall in 2021.

The Rundown
The Phoenix scored the first points of the match inside the 16th minute. Kasper Lehm sent a cross to Jack Edwards in the box from the left side of the box, but a deflection off a West Virginia defender sent the ball into the net for an own goal and a Phoenix 1-0 lead.

The score would hold going into the half. The Mountaineers outshot the Phoenix 5-0 in the opening half with three shots on goal. The Phoenix however kept the Mountaineers off the scoreboard after the first 45 minutes of play.

West Virginia put pressure on the Phoenix to start the second period and eventually knotted the contest at one-all. The Mountaineer's Bjarne Thiesen scored his second goal of the season in the 56th minute to tie the match.

The Mountaineers continued their scoring output after the Phoenix committed a foul in the box to set up a West Virginia penalty kick. Ciro Bourlot Jaeggi pushed the ball past Phoenix keeper Cam Pelle to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 advantage.

Nearly 10 minutes later, West Virginia would convert another penalty kick on another Phoenix foul in the box. Pau Jimenez Albelda's second goal of the year gave the Mountaineers the 3-1 advantage and the eventual win.

Notes
• West Virginia had a 14-3 advantage in shots overall with eight of those coming on goal. Elon's lone on-target attempt came from Edwards in the 66th minute.
• The win was the first for the Mountaineers in its series over the Phoenix. Elon still holds a 2-1-2 all-time record over West Virginia.
• Pelle made his third start of the season in goal for the Phoenix as the redshirt sophomore made five saves in between the posts.
