Efficiency Pays Off as Women’s Soccer Upsets #23/25 Hofstra in Double Overtime, 2-1

ELON, N.C.-- In just two shots on goal, the Elon University women's soccer team delivered its second-ever win against #23/25 Hofstra in double overtime on Oct. 24, 2-1.

"I couldn't be more proud of the group," said head coach Neil Payne. "We knew exactly what we were facing against a top-quality opponent. We've got so much respect for what Simon (Riddiough) and his staff has done at Hofstra. And the team respects their program. We knew it would take a lot of work, resilience and grit. That's what we brought today."

THE RUNDOWN
-Hofstra opened the match with all three shots on goal in the first half, which were all saved by McKenna Dalfonso.
-In the 56th minute, an Elon handball in the box awarded the Pride with a penalty kick, which made its way past Dalfonso to give Hofstra the 1-0 lead.
-23 minutes later, Lydia Totten found the back of the net for the third time this season to tie the match at one. -Neither team fired a shot in the remaining time, forcing the game into overtime.
-The momentum shifted back to the Pride in the first overtime period. Hofstra outshot the Phoenix 6-0, including two shots on target. But both were saved by Dalfonso.
-In the 107th minute, Hannah Doherty connected with Carson Jones off a free kick, who found the back of the net to end the match with a 2-1 win for the maroon and gold.
NOTES
-Jones' golden goal marks the eighth of her career and second of the season. The first game-winning goal of her 2021 campaign came on Sept. 17 when she scored both goals in Elon's shutout against Furman (2-0).
-In goal, Dalfonso (8-5-2) recorded six saves on the day. The goalkeeper has now totaled at least five saves in four of the past six matches.
-Elon's goals were just the eighth and ninth goals allowed by Hofstra this season. The Pride came into the game with a 38-7 scoring advantage.
-Hofstra outshot the Phoenix 15-5, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
-The Pride came into the game ranked 23rd in RPI and 25th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll.
