ELON, N.C. - The Elon University women's basketball team earned its third consecutive win on Dec. 20 as it posted a 77-65 win over Gardner-Webb.
THE RUNDOWN
-The game started tight with neither team being able to gain a sizable lead. With just over two minutes remaining and the Phoenix leading by two (12-10), Brie Perpignan kickstarted a 7-2 run with a three ball to close out the quarter with a seven-point maroon and gold advantage (19-12).
-Elon gained momentum in the second quarter, outscoring the Runnin' Bulldogs 25-12. In the final six and a half minutes on the clock, Phoenix went on a 23-2 run that was capped by a three pointer from Ariana Nance with 12 seconds left to give the Phoenix a 20-point lead going into halftime (44-24).
-Elon took its largest lead of the night (24) less than two minutes into the third quarter off a second-chance layup by Tyja Traore. The 20-plus point lead remained with the maroon and gold until the final four minutes of the quarter when Gardner-Webb outscored the Phoenix 14-8 going into the final 10 minutes of the contest (63-49).
-The Runnin' Bulldogs managed to cut the Phoenix lead to 10 in the final minutes of the game, but Elon held on to get the 77-65 win.
NOTES
-Perpignan finished the night with 18 points and a career high 12 assists for her third career double-double and second of the season. The guard also had a new personal best in steals (6).
-Perpignan's assists and steals mark a new season best among Phoenix players.
-Nance finished with 15 points on the night in addition to recording a team-high three shots from deep.
-Liles pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while Maya Johnson followed with six. Traore and Nance also grabbed five boards apiece.
-Traore tied her season high in points (7).
-Kellyn Trowse made her first appearance of the season, scoring her first field goal in the final minute of the game. Trowse was a four-year member of Elon's volleyball team.
-Elon's bench outscored Gardner-Webb's bench 23-0.
-Collectively, the Phoenix set season highs in points (77) and field goals made (31).
-With the win, the maroon and gold improves to 8-2 on the season.
