Softball Preps for UNCG in Midweek Contest

ELON, N.C. – After being on the road the previous eight games, the Elon University softball team is back on its home diamond at Hunt Softball Park this Wednesday, March 10, hosting UNCG in a midweek contest. Opening pitch between the Phoenix and the Spartans is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Series Breakdown
• Elon and UNCG have a rivalry that goes back to 1990 in the maroon and gold's fastpitch era. The Spartans hold an all-time lead in the series of 46-39-1 over Elon.
• Wednesday's contest is the first of four games this season between the Phoenix and the Spartans. Both squads will also square up in a three-game set the weekend of March 20-21.
• UNCG won last year's three-game series, 2-1, but the Phoenix took the victory in the finale in Greensboro, N.C., 8-3, in the most recent contest.
 
Last Time Out
• The Phoenix snapped a six-game losing skid on Sunday, March 7, with a 1-0 victory in eight innings over UConn in Elon's finale at the Carolina Classic.
• Kenna Quinn got the complete game win over the Huskies, earning her first shutout of the season. The Boiling Springs, S.C., native allowed seven hits and struck out four to improve to 3-3 on the season.
• Megan Grant provided the lone run of the contest in the top of the eighth with her RBI single that scored Bella Devesa.
 
Quick Hits
• Rebecca Murray stood out at the Carolina Classic as the junior batted .417 overall with five hits, four RBI and her first home run of the year. The Indian Trail, N.C., native also has a current five-game hitting streak and is fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association with her .423 average.
• Quinn's win on Sunday was the 35th over her career, which is fourth overall in school history at the Division I level.
• Grace Kiser is in the top-three of the CAA in home runs (two) and RBI (six). She also has a .667 slugging percentage so far in her rookie campaign.
 
Scouting UNCG
• UNCG are 7-4 in 2021 and is on a current seven-game winning streak after sweeping UNCW last weekend, March 5-6. The Spartans were chosen as the 2021 preseason favorite for the Southern Conference.
• As a team, UNCG is hitting .327 with five regulars in the lineup hitting better than .300 and two above .400. Kayleigh Willis has a team-high 14 hits and a .452 average with six doubles. Jordan Gontram paces the Spartans with her five home runs and 14 RBI.
• The Spartans pitching staff has a cumulative ERA of 5.33 with four players seeing time in the circle. Morgan Scott leads the Spartans in innings pitched with 23.1 with a 3.90 ERA while Alina Varga is 4-0 with an ERA of 4.67 in 21.0 innings.
 
On Deck
Elon continues its homestand this weekend, March 13-14, hosting North Carolina Central in a three-game set. The Phoenix and the Eagles begin the series on Saturday, March 13, at 4:30 p.m.
