Phoenix Earns 5-2 Win at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After trailing 2-0 through five innings, Elon University baseball scored five runs in the top of the sixth to earn a 5-2 road win over Wake Forest on Saturday night, May 8 at David F. Couch Ballpark.

"Total team effort tonight," head coach Mike Kennedy said after the win. "We had a lot of guys contribute in a lot of different ways. Our pitchers competed all night and Kyle Greenler's outing was outstanding. Threw a ton of strikes and just battled all night. Adam Spurlin was outstanding defensively, and we made some really nice plays throughout the game. Had the big inning where we strung together big hits by Anthony Galason and Cole Reynolds and then Willie Havens delivered the big blow! Very good team win!"

ON THE MOUND
Elon used six pitchers on the night. Greenler earned the win after holding the hosts scoreless in 3.1 innings in relief. He allowed two hits and issued one walk while striking out five. Joe Sprake picked up the save as he walked one and fanned another after pitching the bottom of the ninth. Starter Brian Edgington gave up one unearned run on one hit. He finished with two strikeouts add didn't walk anyone through 2.0 innings. Ben Simon was responsible for the other run with three hits in 1.0 inning. Also making appearances were Ian Evans and Liam Dabagian.

AT THE PLATE
Five different batters collected hits for the Phoenix (17-18, 8-7 CAA). Parker Haskin went 1-for-2 with a double, a run and two walks. Reynolds hit 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a base on balls. Havens homered in a 1-for-4 outing as he scored once and drove in three runs. Also going 1-for-4 with a run were Alex Iadisernia and Galason.

THE RUNDOWN
Wake Forest opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the second. Bobby Seymour led off with a single to shortstop and advanced to second on a ground out to short. Michael Ludowig then reached on an error, and the play allowed Seymour to come home. The hosts then added another run in the fourth as a Pierce Bennett hit to right allowed Shane Muntz to score from second.

The Demon Deacons (15-23, 7-19 ACC) threatened again in the fifth. Michael Turconi led off with a double to the gap in left and moved up to third on a fly out to center. Seymour then hit a ground ball to Jarrett Pico, and the Doral, Fla. fired home to Haskin as Elon got the lead runner out. A bunt single and a walk ran the bags full, but Greenler got Ludowig to swing and miss for the third out of the inning.

Elon finally broke through with a five-run top of the sixth. With one out, Haskin walked, Iadisernia singled to left and Galason singled to center to run the bags full. Reynolds then found a hole through the left side of the defense to drive in one, and Iadisernia then scored from third on a passed ball to knot the score at 2-2. Havens then gave the Phoenix the 5-2 lead with a three-run blast to right.

Greenler retired eight batters in a row, including retiring the side in the seventh and eighth innings. With one runner standing on first in the bottom of the ninth, Spurlin fielded a line drive right at him and fired to Reynolds to complete the 6-3 double play. Sprake then struck out the next batter to close the door on the Deacs.
