Elon Rounds Out Strong Showing at Elon Fall Invitational

ELON, N.C. – Nicholas Condos and Daniel Martin each won their singles flights, while Kyle Frankel and Ben Zipay won their doubles flight as Elon University men's tennis rounded out the Elon Fall Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

"I thought our tournament was a success," head coach Michael Leonard began. "Proud of Nick and Daniel for winning their singles flights as well as Ben and Kyle in doubles. Nick really stood out for his positive mindset throughout the tournament. Han also showed a lot of heart by coming back and winning three matches after losing a tight first round match. We are looking forward to getting back on the court to build off of this tournament."
 
THE RUNDOWN
- In the Gold singles flight, Daniel Martin went undefeated on the way to claiming the draw crown. Martin opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 win over UNC's M. Dillon, before taking down O. Tobisch of ODU 6-3, 7-5 in the next round. In the semifinals, Martin defeated UNCC's A. Vannemredy 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the finals where he would outlast UNCC's S. Sawa 6-1, 7-5 to win the flight.
- Nicholas Condos won the Phoenix singles flight after taking down Radford's A. Silva 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday. Condos advanced to the final round by defeating Richmond's J. Walsh 1-6, 6-1, 6-0 in a three-set battle in the semifinals. He also picked up wins over Radford's R. Mujan (6-3, 6-0) and Liberty's O. El Kadi (6-1, 6-2) along the way.
- After a close three-set loss on day one, Chung-Han Tsai bounced back to win the back-draw of the Gold singles flight on Sunday. Tsai picked up a three-set win over UNC Asheville's H. Thursfield 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 before outlasting ODU's O. Nolan 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the final. In the final of the back-draw, Tsai defeated UNC's M. Dillon 6-3, 6-2 to round out his weekend.
Kyle Frankel and Ben Zipay combined to win the Maroon doubles flight behind a 6-2 victory against UNCG's Rogowski and Wyett on Sunday morning. The tandem also picked up wins over UNC Asheville's Thursfield and Fender (6-2), as well as Richmond's Bell and Wash (6-4) over the weekend.
 
NOTES
- Frankel picked up two singles wins during the tournament, defeating Richmond's D. Kliebhand (6-2, 6-3) and UNC Asheville's B. Reid (7-5, 2-6, 6-4) respectively.
Nicholas Campbell and Esteban Penagos rounded out this weekend's singles wins for the Phoenix.
- The duo of Martin and Tsai earned a doubles victory over the weekend, defeating JMU's Koons and Karpinski 6-2.
- Condos and Campbell also combined to defeat Richmond's Kliebhan and Keitelman 6-4 in the Phoenix doubles flight.
- The tandem of Quieroz and Penagos rounded out the doubles wins for Elon, taking down UNCG's Gwynn and Flisberg 6-2.
 
UP NEXT
The Phoenix will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16, when it travels to Greensboro, N.C. for the UNCG Invitational.
