Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision Against UNCW in Conference Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C.— Elon University women's soccer fell to UNCW in its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener on Sept. 26.
 
THE RUNDOWN
-The first three attempts on goal belonged to the Phoenix. Beky Myers took the first during the opening minute of play, followed by back-to-back shots by Carson Jones and Kennedy Jones in the 17th and 18th minute.
-UNCW took its lone shot on goal of the half off a corner kick, but McKenna Dalfonso made a diving save to keep the match scoreless with 16:49 on the clock.
-Despite the Seahawks outshooting the Phoenix 3-0 in the remaining time, the match remained scoreless heading into halftime.
-In the 64th minute, UNCW took a 1-0 lead after Audrey Harding fired a shot in the left side of the net.
-Following four Elon shots, Kayla Hodges recorded her third goal of the season in the 64th minute to even the score.
-The final opportunity for the Phoenix to score came four minutes later when Abby Fusca took a shot to the middle of the net, but it was saved by Kaylie Bierman.   
-With less than a minute on the clock, Harding scored with the game-winning goal to secure the victory for the Seahawks.

NOTES
-Hodges' goal was the first given up by the Seahawks since Aug. 29 when UNCW defeated UNCG 2-1. 
-The Phoenix registered a 12-9 advantage in shots in addition to totaling four more shots on goal than the Seahawks (7-3).
-Myers paced the Elon in shots (3), with Carson Jones, Kennedy Jones and Makenzie DePriest-Kessler following with two apiece. Carson Jones also led the team in attempts on goal (2).
-Elon now stands at 5-4 (0-1 CAA) on the season, while UNCW improves to 5-1-1 (1-0 CAA).
 
UP NEXT
The maroon and gold will host Delaware on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
