Volleyball Loses to Northeastern in CAA Quarterfinals

TOWSON, Md. – The Elon University volleyball team's season came to an end on Thursday, as the Phoenix lost to fourth-seeded Northeastern 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.

"We were not playing at a high level today but still managed to give ourselves a chance to take it to a fifth set," head coach Mary Tendler said. "I'm proud of the players for grinding it out and putting themselves in that position."

With the win, Northeastern advances to the semifinals, where the Huskies will face the No. 1 seed and tournament host Towson on Friday. The loss ends Elon's season, as the Phoenix finish with a 13-14 overall record.

"We will miss our five seniors, but at the same time, I am super excited for this program moving forward," Tendler continued. "Congratulations to Northeastern, I wish them the best of luck the rest of the tournament."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Huskies won the first five points of the opening set and raced out to a 14-14 lead. Northeastern never looked back, as they went on to win the opening frame 25-18.
  • After a slow start in the first, Elon responded quickly in the second, taking a 7-2 advantage behind kills from Leah Daniel, Sydney Love and Lily Barker. After the Huskies trimmed their deficit to one, the Phoenix rebuilt its lead to as many as six points at 19-13. Northeastern chipped away but a block by Haylie Clark and Lindsey Harris secured a 25-22 win for Elon in the second.
  • Northeastern started the third set on a 10-3 run and led by as many as 10 points at 24-14. A late 3-0 run by the Phoenix, which included two Daniel kills and a block by Barker and Harris, erased three Northeastern set points but the Huskies delivered a kill on the next point to take the set 25-17.
  • The teams traded points and momentum throughout the fourth set. Northeastern built a three-point lead early and despite Elon trimming it several times in the frame, the Huskies held a 17-14 advantage late. A 4-1 Elon run tied the score at 18-18 before Northeastern went back ahead 20-18. Three kills in four points by Daniel, Love and Clark helped the Phoenix re-tie the set at 21-21. Tied again at 23-23, Love hit her 16th kill of the match to give Elon a set point. However, after a timeout, Huskies won two straight to set up a match point. After an Elon timeout, Northeastern converted it to win the set 26-24, clinching the match.
