Women's Basketball Rolls To Rivalry Win Over UNCG

ELON, N.C. — Vanessa Taylor led a season-high four double-digit scorers with 14 points as the Elon women's basketball team defeated Triad rival UNCG 75-58 on Saturday at Schar Center.

Taylor went 5-for-7 from the field and tallied six rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal as part of an impressive all-around effort. Joining her in double figures were Lenaejha Evans (13 points), Kamryn Doty (11) and Bria Harmon (10).

With the win, the Phoenix improved to 2-2, while UNCG fell to 2-2.

"We are extremely excited to pull out another victory," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "I am very pleased with the balanced attack and scoring of our team. This reminds me of our championship teams and that's the goal. We are progressing and growing each game as a team, and this really excites me for our future."

THE RUNDOWN

  • Elon opened the game on a 7-0 run and stretched its lead to as many as 10 points in the first quarter. Seven different players scored as the Phoenix went 6-for-13 from the field and outrebounded the Spartans 14-7 en route to a 16-8 lead at the end of the period.
  • Elon outscored UNCG 13-5 over the first 6:39 of the second quarter, extending its lead to 29-13. The Spartans, however, didn't back down, using a 10-2 run to cut the Phoenix's lead to 31-23 at halftime.
  • UNCG stayed within striking distance for most of the third quarter, but with 2:13 left in the period, Chloe Williams made two free throws to spark a 7-0 Elon run. The Spartans snapped it with a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left, but Doty responded with a buzzer-beating layup to push the Phoenix's lead to 57-39.
  • Coming out of the break, Harmon made a layup to give Elon a 20-point lead, its largest of the season. UNCG got back within 13 late, but the Phoenix mostly coasted through the fourth quarter en route to its second straight win.

NOTES

  • Elon shot 49.1% (27-for-55) from the field, its best mark since shooting 50% against William & Mary on March 3. Its 75 points also marked its most since scoring 85 in that same game against the Tribe.
  • The Phoenix went 5-for-7 on 3-pointers to improve to 10-for-20 over its last six quarters. Elon made 8-of-32 shots from behind the arc over the first 10 quarters of the season.
  • The Phoenix held UNCG to 29% shooting (9-for-31) in the first half, marking the first time this season it has held an opponent below 30% in a half.
  • Elon outrebounded the Spartans 45-27. Its 28 first-half rebounds were six more than it's tallied in any other half this season.
  • The Phoenix's four double-digit scorers were its most since having five on Feb. 11 at UNCW.
  • Taylor's 14 points were the second most of her career; her personal best of 17 came at Gardner-Webb on Nov. 25, 2020. The senior entered Sunday with four total points in Elon's first three games.
  • After scoring six points on 3-for-12 shooting in her first two games with the Phoenix, Evans has responded by pouring in 32 points on 11-for-20 shooting in Elon's last two contests. The Rider graduate transfer has also gone 9-for-11 on free throws in that span after not logging an attempt in her first two games.
  • Doty's 11 points matched her career high, set at NC State on Nov. 10. Her four steals were also a career high and the most by a Phoenix player since Kayla Liles had four against Hofstra on Feb. 18.
  • Harmon's 10 points matched her career high, set against North Carolina Central on Nov. 29, 2021.
  • Raven Preston matched her career high with nine points on 4-for-5 shooting. She also registered a career-high three steals and six rebounds, increasing her team-best total to 28.
  • Williams added seven points and six rebounds, matching her career high.

UP NEXT

  • Elon will wrap up its three-game homestand Tuesday when it hosts Old Dominion in the first-ever game between both programs. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
