WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team extended its winning streak to five on Sunday, as the Phoenix survived a comeback effort from UNCW to earn a 3-2 victory and complete a weekend sweep.
"We were definitely not as sharp today as we were yesterday," head coach
Mary Tendler said. "At the same time, UNCW played really well. I'm proud of our team for staying confident and aggressive in the fifth set to pull out the win."
With the win, Elon is now 9-5 in Colonial Athletic Association contests and 12-12 overall. The loss drops UNCW to 2-12 in the CAA and 4-19 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon boasted a balanced attack offensively throughout the opening set, as five players registered multiple kills. After a back and forth start, a 4-0 run that included four kills put the Phoenix ahead 10-6. UNCW pulled within one at 17-16 but Elon delivered seven kills to win eight of the next 12 points and clinch a 25-20 victory.
- Up 8-7 in the second set, Elon again delivered a 4-0 run to pull away from the Seahawks. UNCW cut its deficit to 17-15 but the Phoenix offense again finished strong, as Sydney Love, Jenn Krzeminski and Leah Daniel combined for five kills in the final 12 points to help Elon earn a 25-19 win.
- UNCW won the first three points of the third set, but the Phoenix battled back to take the lead and led by as many as three at 12-9. However, with the score tied at 18-18, the Seahawks won four straight points to take a 22-18 advantage. The Phoenix immediately responded with a 5-0 run of its own, but the Seahawks won the final two points of the frame to win it, 26-24.
- The Seahawks carried their momentum into the fourth set, as they raced out to an early 7-2 lead. Elon pulled within two points on several occasions but got no closer, as UNCW took six of the final eight points to win the set 25-19 and force a fifth.
- A Love kill put Elon ahead 4-2 early in the fifth set but UNCW won the next two points to tie the score. A 4-0 run in the middle of the set helped Elon go ahead 12-7, as Haylie Clark and Daniel both had a kill in the stretch. Clark and Daniel combined for three more kills over the next six points to help close out a 15-10 win, including a final kill from Daniel to clinch the match.
