#8 Duke Defeats Elon

Elon, N.C. – The No. 8 Duke Blue Devils scored six consecutive goals to close the first period and the Elon women's lacrosse team was unable to recover in a 25-5 loss Sunday on a rain-soaked Rudd Field. Elon has played back-to-back teams ranked among the top 11 in the country to open the 2022 spring campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Duke used a dominant 24-7 advantage in draw controls to maintain possession throughout much of the contest. Third team All-American Maddie Jenner, who is on pace to surpass older sister Olivia as Duke's all-time draw control leader, had 19 draw controls to help the Blue Devils stay on the offensive.
  • Despite the advantage on draws, Elon hung close early. Gillian Curran, who had five goals against No. 11 Virginia Friday night, scored early and teammate Cate Mackel added the team's only free position goal of the contest as the Phoenix trailed only 3-2 midway through the first quarter.
  • Duke, though, scored the final six of the first and added another early in the second to go ahead 10-2.
  • The Blue Devils had another six-goal run in the second and closed the match with the final eight goals for the final 25-5 score.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Curran led Elon with two goals on a team-best four shots (three on goal).
  • Goalkeeper Chloe Herghelegiu, making her first career start, had a team-high three groundballs.
  • Mikaela Buoscio led Elon with three draw controls.
  • Seven different Elon players had a caused turnover in the match.
  • Duke held a 40-12 advantage in shots and 20-11 in groundballs. The two teams were fairly even in turnovers with the Blue Devils having 16 and Elon 18.
  • Duke was 12-of-14 on clear attempts and Elon went 10-of-18.

  • Elon has almost two weeks off before hosting Vanderbilt on Feb. 25 at 1:00 p.m.
  • The Phoenix will also host Coastal Carolina two days later at noon on Feb. 27.
