Softball Hosts St. Bonaventure in Three-Game Set This Weekend

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team returns to its home diamond of Hunt Softball Park to host St. Bonaventure in a three-game series this weekend, Feb. 26-27. The Phoenix and the Bonnies open with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. before concluding the series on Sunday at noon.

Series Breakdown
• This weekend is the first-ever meeting between the Phoenix and the Bonnies on the softball diamond.
 
Last Time Out
• The Phoenix traveled to No. 13 Duke on Wednesday, Feb. 23, for its first road game of the season.
• Elon held an early 4-0 lead over its in-state rival after putting up a four-spot in the top of the second frame.
• The Blue Devils came back with five unanswered runs to take the 5-4 victory over the Phoenix, its third straight in the series.
Gabi Schaal drove in a pair of runs for the maroon and gold while Megan Grant and Drew Menscer also provided a pair of RBI.
 
Triple Threat
• Grant tied an NCAA Division I record last Friday, versus Providence as the Vinton, Va.., native recorded three triples against the Friars. She became the first player at the NCAA Division I level to register a three-triple game since 2019.
• Grant achieved the feat in her first three at bats against the Friars. Prior to that game, Grant had recorded two triples in her career.
• Going into this weekend, Grant currently sits fourth in the nation in total triples.
 
Weber Tabbed CAA Pitcher of the Week
• Redshirt senior McKenzie Weber was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 22, for her performance last week.
• The Overland Park, Kan., native improved to 2-0 on the season after earning a complete-game shutout win over Morgan State on Sunday. Weber scattered five hits in her seven innings of action while striking out two batters.
• Weber also pitched a scoreless inning in relief versus Providence last Friday. She becomes the first Elon pitcher to receive CAA Pitcher of the Week accolades since Kenna Quinn in 2020.
 
Around the Horn
• The Phoenix is 7-3 after its setback at No. 13 Duke on Wednesday and has a 7-2 record so far this season at home.
• Elon has relied on its seven-person pitching staff through its 10 games so far this season with five hurlers tallying five or more innings. As a unit, Elon has a 2.84 ERA, which ranks third overall in the CAA. The Phoenix has also struck out 57 batters, which is second behind UNCW's 75 in the league.
• Senior Rebecca Murray continues to have a great start to her 2022 campaign. The Indian Trail, N.C., native leads the team with her .407 average and ranks in the top-five of the CAA in on-base percentage (.515), runs scored (seven), hits (11), doubles (two), walks (six) while pacing the league with her seven stolen bases.
• Elon has forced 40 walks as a team this season, which leads the CAA and is 27th overall in the country.
• The Phoenix is 16th in the country in double plays per game at 0.60.
Kathy Bocock is in her 11th season at the helm of the Elon softball program. She has amassed 488 career victories with 240 of those coming at Elon.
 
Scouting St. Bonaventure
• The Bonnies are 1-3 on the young season after last playing four games at Hampton this past weekend. St. Bonaventure earned its lone over Norfolk State on Sunday, defeating the Spartans 7-2.
• Junior pitcher Elizabeth Lis was named the Atlantic-10 Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after her performance in the Bonnies' win over Norfolk State. On the season, Lis has a 1-0 record with a 2.00 ERA with four strikeouts.
• Offensively, St. Bonaventure is hitting .241 on the year with 14 runs scored. Four players are hitting 300 or better for the Bonnies with senior Emily Lewandowski hitting .400 to lead the team.
 
On Deck
Elon is back on the diamond on Monday, Feb. 28, hosting Big Ten foe Michigan at Hunt Softball Park with the Wolverines being a last-minute addition on the Phoenix's schedule. The first-ever meeting between Elon and Michigan is slated for a 4:30 p.m. opening pitch.
