Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Longwood

ELON, N.C. – Brian Edgington recorded 10 strikeouts through six innings and Elon University baseball completed its series sweep of Longwood with a 5-3 win on Sunday, Feb. 27 at Latham Park. The Phoenix is now 4-3 overall this season.

"Excited to be able to finish the weekend on a positive note," said head coach Mike Kennedy. "Edgington was outstanding today! He competed and really pitched well. Can't say enough about the job Kyle Greenler is doing. He has been great and was again tonight!"

ON THE MOUND
Greenler (2-0) picked up his second win in the series with 3.0 innings of scoreless work out of the pen. The Georgetown, Mass. native gave up just one hit, did not walk anyone and struck out five of the 12 batters he faced. Edgington made the start and limited the Lancers (3-5) to three runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks.

AT THE PLATE
Alex Duffey was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, adding a walk, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Carlos Marte had the other multi-hit performance for the Phoenix, batting 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI as well. Alex Iadisernia contributed a 1-for-2 effort as he tripled, drove in two runs, scored once and drew a walk. Parker Haskin finished 1-for-3 with a run and Justin Cassella had the team's other hit in a 1-for-4 day at the plate.

"Thought we did some really good things offensively today," continued Kennedy. "We have not hit our stride at the plate and I challenged our guys post-game yesterday to find ways to help when they are not in a great place. We talked about small ball and executing the bunt game and today we did a great job of that. I liked how we answered their runs in the third and seventh innings with runs of our own! Had some big knocks late from Marte and Duffey."

THE RUNDOWN
Elon got off to a quick start in the first as Duffey drew a one-out walk and came around on an Iadisernia triple down the right-field line. The Phoenix then made it 2-0 as Willie Havens skied an 0-1 pitch to left field, allowing Iadisernia to tag up and touch home. The visitors finally broke through with a run in the top of the third thanks to an Elon throwing error, but the Phoenix answered in the home half of the frame. After back-to-back hits from Marte and Cassella put runners on first and second, Duffey moved the pair up with a sacrifice bunt. Marte then scored on an Iadisernia sac fly to left as Elon went back up by two, 3-1.

Neither side scored again until the seventh when the Lancers pushed two runs across to knot the game at 3-3. With runners on first and second and no outs, a fielding error loaded the bases before Longwood got a free run on a wild pitch. Another run came across on a second Elon fielding error in the inning.

Elon was able to get the two runs back in its next turn at the plate. Haskin led off with a base hit to right field. Connor Coolahan then executed a sacrifice bunt, but Haskin beat the throw to second and both runners were safe. Cole Reynolds followed with another sacrifice bunt before Marte drove in Haskin with a hit to right field. Coolahan moved up to third on the play and scored on a Duffey single up the middle, giving the Phoenix the 5-3 lead. Greenler retired the Lancers in order in the eighth and allowed a two-out single in the ninth, but closed out the game with a strikeout swinging.
