Edgington's Arm Helps Secure Series Win Over Army

ELON, N.C. – Brian Edgington recorded 11 strikeouts and Elon University baseball defeated Army 6-1 on Saturday, March 19 at Latham Park.

"I like how we keep competing," said head coach Mike Kennedy. "Didn't think we played very well, but had some effort plays that resulted in scoring some big runs. Edgington was awesome and kept them at bay until we could scratch a few runs."

ON THE MOUND
Edgington scattered seven hits, did not walk anyone and held the Black Knights (3-13) to one unearned run in seven complete innings of work. He improves to 3-0 this season with the win. Ben Simon came out of the pen to throw the other two innings and the sophomore from East Windsor, N.J. allowed just two hits with two strikeouts.

AT THE PLATE
Alex Iadisernia hit 1-for-3, scored once, drove in two runs and added a stolen base to his totals. Justin Cassella also drove in two runs as he finished 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly. Luke Stephenson doubled, walked once and came around twice as he also batted 1-for-3. Cole Reynolds turned in a multi-hit effort as he went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

THE RUNDOWN
Both teams scored a run in the third inning. Army's leadoff batter reached on a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Edgington struck out the next two batters, but the runner scored as Connor Coolahan's throw home sailed over Stephenson. The Phoenix (11-7) pulled even as Reynolds led off with a double down the left-field linemoved on a Carlos Marte sacrifice bunt and tagged up on a Charlie Granatell sac fly to left center. Elon jumped ahead 3-1 with two runs in the home half of the sixth. With one out, Iadisernia was hit by a pitch and Stephenson earned a base on balls. After a Connor Offshack ground out to third moved both runners up, Cassella beat out the throw for an RBI bunt single as Iadisernia crossed the plate. Army's first baseman could not field the throw as the ball got past him into foul territory, and Stephenson came home on the error.

Elon plated another two runs in the seventh as an Iadisernia single to second brought in Marte and Coolahan. Stephenson rounded out the scoring in the eighth as he doubled down the right field line, advanced to third on a Parker Haskin ground out to first and tagged up on a Cassella sac fly to right field.
