HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Phoenix took a 2-1 lead just over five minutes into the game, with the maroon and gold's goals coming from Cate Mackel and Hannah McCarthy. Over the next five minutes, the Hokies went on a 3-1 run. But back-to-back goals from Margaret Stephan and Kaitlyn Michaud put the Phoenix up 5-4 heading into the second quarter.
-Following a Virginia Tech goal and another from Michaud, the Hokies scored three unanswered goals to hold an 8-6 advantage at the half.
-Both teams managed to find the back of the net three times in the third period, resulting in an 11-9 score heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
-Virginia Tech went on a 2-0 run that lasted just under 10 minutes (13-9). Kaley Ehnow and Gillian Curran both added a goal to cut the Hokie lead to two in the remaining time, but a goal by Virginia Tech with less than 30 seconds on the clock led to the three-goal victory for the Hokies.
