RICHMOND, VA. – Elon University men's basketball junior guard
Hunter McIntosh was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete of the Year and to the All-Conference third team, while sophomore guard
Darius Burford also earned All-CAA third team honors, the league office announced on Friday, March 4.
McIntosh was selected as the conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year after graduating with his degree in finance after just two-and-a-half years at Elon. The junior has been named to the CAA Commissioner's Honor Roll, AD Honor Roll and President's List in each of his five semesters on campus and graduated Summa Cum Laude this past December. The two-time Phillips-Perry Black Excellence Award recipient is currently pursuing his master's degree in business analytics. With the honor, McIntosh becomes just the second player in Elon history to win CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Tyler Sebring '19, who won the award twice (2017, 2019).
Following a stellar third season on the court for the Phoenix, McIntosh earned all-conference honors for the third time in his career after being named to the All-CAA second team last season and being named the conference's Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2019. McIntosh rounded out the year second on the team in scoring at 13.3 ppg, also ranking 10
th overall in the CAA. The junior out of Snellville, Ga. also ranked in the top three in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (37.8% - 2
nd) and three-point field goals made per game (2.7 – 3
rd). McIntosh started in all 31 of Elon's games this season, scoring in double figures 20 times. Against James Madison on Feb. 10, McIntosh scored his 1,000
th career point, becoming just the 46
th player in program history to accomplish the feat. He is one of just seven active players in the CAA to score at least 1,000 points in their career.
In just his second season at Elon, Burford garnered All-CAA third team honors after being named to the All-Rookie team last season. Burford rounded out the year leading the team in scoring at 13.7 points per game (fifth in CAA), while finishing second in the conference in field goal percentage (46.3%). The sophomore out of Bolingbrook, Ill., scored in double-figures a team-best 20 times, including a team-leading seven 20+ point performances. Against Drexel on Feb. 19, Burford dropped a career-high 31 points, adding eight rebounds in the contest. Burford was the lone Phoenix to earn a Player of the Week honor this year, as the sophomore picked up the distinction following a 23-point outing to lead Elon to a win in its conference opener against Northeastern on Dec. 29.
Elon opens the 2022 Jersey Mike's Subs CAA Championship on Sunday, March 6, against second-seeded UNC Wilmington. Tipoff in the contest is slated for 6 p.m. at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.
