ELON, N.C. – Elon University baseball couldn't get the offense going as the Phoenix (18-20, 3-8 CAA) fell 3-0 to College of Charleston on Saturday, April 23 at Latham Park.
"Thought we competed well on the mound," said head coach
Mike Kennedy. "A couple of mistakes in big pitch situations. Right now we can't cover up many mistakes from the offensive side. Had a few opportunities with a runner on third and less than two outs where we didn't execute quality at bats and couldn't push the run across. We need to salvage game three tomorrow."
ON THE MOUND
Brian Edgington falls to 5-3 after giving up three runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out four in the five-inning start.
Liam Dabagian recorded two strikeouts, allowed one hit and didn't issue a walk in two scoreless innings in relief.
Cole Reynolds also tossed two scoreless frames with one hit and no walks.
AT THE PLATE
Alex Iadisernia and
Connor Offshack both went 1-for-4 to lead the maroon and gold at the plate.
Luke Stephenson earned two bases on balls while
Griffin Arnone and
Alex Duffey both walked once.
THE RUNDOWN
The Cougars (25-13, 12-2) opened the scoring with two runs in the top half of the second inning. After three straight singles loaded the bases, Duffey fielded a weak ground ball and threw to Stephenson for the force at home. However, CofC's Cam Dean hit an RBI single to left and Tyler Sorrentino later worked a full count for a bases-loaded walk. Elon looked like it might answer in the home half of the frame as Stephenson drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on an Offshack single to the gap in right. After
Will Vergantino went down looking, CofC was able to get Stephenson out at home as Arnone reached on the fielder's choice. Duffey walked to load up the bases, but
Carlos Marte grounded out.
CofC added an insurance run in the fifth inning as a Sorrentino tagged up on a Trotter Harlan sacrifice fly to right center. Elon had another opportunity to break through in the sixth. Iadisernia single to straightaway center, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Stephenson ground out back to the pitcher. However, Offshack struck out swinging and Vergantino was retired on a 4-3 ground out.
