Elon, N.C. - The Elon University football team held its 15th and final spring practice, closing the spring with a scrimmage inside Rhodes Stadium Saturday.
The Elon defense, which returns 10 starters from the fall, has looked strong throughout spring ball but both sides of the ball had the opportunity to shine at various times during the scrimmage.Â
Some of the highlights included an acrobatic interception by
Jamarian Hawkins on the second possession of the scrimmage, a beautiful
Jamarien Dalton touchdown reception during a two-minute drive, and a
Skyler Davis 54-yard field goal.

Elon Football Head Coach
Tony Trisciani also announced team captains for the 2022 season Saturday. Seniors
Devonte Chandler,
Jackson Parham and
Torrence Williams will serve as the leaders for the program heading into the fall campaign. Chandler will serve as a captain for the third season, while both Parham and Williams have been named captains for the first time.
Â
Chandler, a linebacker from Chester, Va., has played in 28 career games for the Phoenix, starting all 11 a year ago. He was second on the team with 70 tackles and had team highs with 10.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He also led the team with eight quarterback hurries. A consistent performer, he recorded at least two tackles in every game a year ago and twice had as many as 11.
Â
Parham, a wide receiver from Hillsborough, N.J., has played in 36 career games for the Phoenix, including every contest over the past three seasons. A First Team All-CAA player a year ago, Parham has a reception in 17 consecutive games. He led Elon with 57 catches for 820 yards in the fall and had his first 100-yard game with 106 yards against William & Mary. He topped that with 122 yards against New Hampshire.
Â
Williams, a defensive end from Burlington, N.C., has played in all 39 games of his four-year career. A year ago, he had 46 tackles, 6.0 for loss, 3.0 sacks, a quarterback hurry, a pass break-up and a blocked kick. He had at least two tackles in every game with a season-best eight against Wofford. Williams blocked a key fourth quarter field goal attempt at Maine and added five tackles in that contest.
"Like most football programs across the country, we have a lot of players returning for an extra season due to the additional COVID year of eligibility," Trisciani said. "We had 15 different players receive over ten votes (from their teammates). That tells me that our football team does not lack leadership. Devonte, Jackson, and Torrence are great representatives of Elon University and of our football program. They are talented athletes who have the ability to elevate the level of play around them with their competitiveness and winning habits.
Â
"Being a team captain is an honor and privilege that comes with great responsibility. Captains are stabilizing forces, players who give their all to the team, and aren't afraid to take a tough stance when it comes to maintaining the standards and expectations of our football program."
