Elon, N.C. – Elon University senior safety Cole Coleman has been named to the 2022 Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-American Team. A third-team selection, Coleman is the first player named to the preseason All-American team since Warren Messer was a preseason first team selection in 2018. Coleman is one of five defensive players from CAA Football to earn recognition on either the first, second or third team.
 
A two-time all-conference player, Coleman was named first team All-CAA last year after leading Elon's opportunistic defense with 71 tackles. He added 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack, while ranking No. 26 in the nation in forced fumbles with three. Coleman also had three pass break-ups, an interception and a blocked kick.
 
Arguably, Coleman's best game came against William & Mary when he had 10 tackles, a forced fumble, and interception and a blocked kick. He added eight tackles in the win at ranked Richmond. He led Elon to a third-place finish in CAA Football a year ago and is a centerpiece of a defense that returns nine starters in 2022.
 
Coleman has started 30 games during his career at Elon and has 246 career tackles to go with six passes defended and two interceptions. He had a career-high 84 tackles in 2019.
 
Elon Football kicks off the regular season Sept. 3 at Vanderbilt at 7:00 p.m. ET. The Phoenix will host Gardner-Webb in the home opener Sept. 17 and hosts Richmond for Family Weekend Oct. 1. Homecoming takes place Nov. 5 when Elon rounds out the home campaign against Albany.
