Spartanburg, S.C. – The Elon University football team posted its first shutout in five years, defeating long-time rival Wofford for the first time since 2009, in a 26-0 victory Saturday at Gibbs Stadium.
Elon held Wofford to just 128 yards of total offense and methodically dominated the game on both sides of the ball
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both teams punted on their first possessions of the game, Elon used an eight-play drive to set up kicker Skyler Davis for a school-record tying field goal attempt. Davis nailed the 52-yarder, his second such kick of his career, to put Elon ahead 3-0 midway through the first quarter.
- The Elon defense continued to force Wofford punts and the Phoenix took over at its own 20 with one second remaining in the first quarter. Matthew McKay found Chandler Brayboy for a 43-yard connection that got the Elon offense kickstarted.
- The Phoenix capped off the seven-play, 80-yard drive with a Jackson Parham three-yard touchdown reception to make the score 9-0.
- Wofford's next possession lasted just two plays before senior safety Cole Coleman intercepted a pass along the sidelines, setting up Davis for a 32-yard field goal to make it 12-0 heading into the half.
- In the third quarter, Elon added to the lead as McKay found Parham for a six-yard strike to make it 19-0 late in the period.
- The Phoenix finished the scoring early in the fourth as McKay hit Jordan Bonner for an acrobatic 27-yard touchdown to get the 26-0 win.
