Anatomy Of A Rally: How Elon Posted Its Biggest Comeback In FCS Program History

9/25/2022 5:14:00 PM

The Elon football team posted the biggest comeback in its 23-year FCS history Saturday, rallying from a 28-10 halftime deficit to defeat No. 14 William & Mary 35-31. Elon improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in CAA Football play with the victory. Here's a breakdown of what went right.

WINNING THE FIELD POSITION BATTLE

Sophomore punter Jeff Yurk had a forgettable first half with punts of 33, 30 and 16 yards. But he more-than made up for it with a second half like none other. He had two punts, the first of which went a career-long 65 yards and was downed by Chandler Brayboy at the one-yard line. The second carried 52 yards and was AGAIN downed at the one-yard line by Brayboy. Flipping the field position and pinning William & Mary at the one limited the Tribe's playbook, which quickly got the ball back for the Elon offense.

GET THOSE TURNOVERS

Down by 18 points, and still down 15 heading to the fourth, Elon needed to get the ball back and get it back quickly. William & Mary's third quarter fumble led directly to an Elon touchdown, as did the Tribe's fumble in the fourth quarter.

RUN THE BALL EFFECTIVELY

Trailing by double digits in the second half, it's easy to get caught up in a desire to throw the ball on every down. But going one-dimensional makes it easier on the defense. Elon ran for 118 yards in the second half, including 84 yards in the fourth quarter behind dazzling performances from Jalen Hampton, Matthew McKay and DJ Moyer.

GET IT TO THE WIDE RECEIVERS

Elon's wide receiver unit is one of the best in the country and Bryson Daughtry and Jackson Parham made big plays when it mattered down the stretch.
