Elon Continues CAA Play With Pair Of Matches At Northeastern

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team (5-8, 3-1 CAA) heads north to Boston for a weekend series Saturday and Sunday against Northeastern (3-8, 0-2 CAA). Both matches at the Cabot Center are slated to start at 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon went 1-1 against William & Mary last weekend in its first CAA home series. The Phoenix won in straight sets on Saturday but fell in a five-setter on Sunday. 
  • Freshman Clara LaRue tallied 25 kills in the two matches, including a career-high 15 on Sunday. She also had a career-high 43 attacks in Sunday's match. 
  • Haylie Clark posted 51 assists in Sunday's match, one short of tying her career-high of 52. 
  • Sydney Love had a combined 26 kills over the weekend. The sophomore played against younger sister Ryann, a freshman for William & Mary, for the first time at the college level. 
  • The Phoenix registered double-digit blocks in both matches and have at least 10 blocks in five straight contests. 
 
CHASING RECORDS
  • With 1,413 career kills, senior Leah Daniel is 37 kills away from tying Emily Hayes, Elon's Division I era leader in kills (1,450). Daniel is also 48 away from tying Velma Degree (1,461), Elon's all-time leader in kills. 
  • The Preseason CAA Player of the Year is tied for third in the CAA in kills this season with 173 (13.3 per match). She also ranks No. 4 in the conference in kills per set (3.33). 
 
PHOENIX FACTS
  • Freshman Clara LaRue has registered double-digit kills in three consecutive matches and is third on the team in kills per set (1.95). 
  • Haylie Clark has eclipsed 30 assists in each of Elon's last six matches. The senior ranks No. 3 in the CAA in assists (420) and No. 5 in assists per set (8.08). She also has eight double-doubles in her last 11 matches. 
  • Senior Jordan Gower ranks No. 27 in the NCAA and leads the CAA in digs per set (4.97). She has totaled at least 20 digs four times and has double-digit digs in every match this season. 
  • With 49 total blocks this season, Jenn Krzeminski is sixth in the conference in the category. Sydney Love (44) and Lily Emlong (34) also rank in the top 10 in the CAA in total blocks. 
  • As a team, the Phoenix leads the CAA in total blocks with 117. Elon also leads the conference in total digs (817) and digs per set (15.71). 
 
THE SERIES
  • Northeastern leads the all-time series against Elon, 11-5. 
  • The Huskies won both matchups between the teams last season in Boston on Oct. 23 and 24. 
  • The maroon and gold's last victory against Northeastern came at the 2019 CAA Volleyball Tournament, when Elon won in five sets. 
  • Elon has never won a match (0-8) at the Cabot Center. Five of the eight matchups between the Phoenix and Huskies in Boston have gone to a fifth set. 
 
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
  • The Huskies enter the weekend with a 3-8 overall record and an 0-2 mark in CAA matches after losing a pair at Delaware on Sept. 17 and 18.
  • Erica Staunton's 173 kills are tied for third most in the CAA. 
  • With 9.33 assists per set this season, Jessica Frannea ranks No. 4 in the conference in the category. She posted a season-high 50 assists in Northeastern's last match against Delaware. 
  • Kayla Martin is fourth in the CAA with 190 digs this season. The senior is coming off a 24-dig performance in the team's last match against Delaware. 
  • Nailah Jenkins leads Northeastern with 41 blocks.
  • The head coach of the Huskies is Lenika Vazquez, who is in her third year with the program. 
 
UP NEXT
  • Elon travels to Durham for its final non-conference match of the season against NC Central on Oct. 5. The match is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
  • After a bye weekend, the Phoenix returns to CAA play with a series against Towson on Oct. 15-16. The Tigers are 14-0 and received 30 votes in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll. Both matches at Schar Center are scheduled for 2 p.m.
