ELON, N.C. – Raven Preston posted her fourth double-double, setting a new freshman record under
Charlotte Smith, but the Elon women's basketball team fell 69-51 to Northeastern on Sunday at Schar Center.
With 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, Preston surpassed
Shay Burnett (2014-18) for the most double-doubles by a freshman in Smith's 12-season tenure. Making the milestone even more significant was that Burnett was among the 813 fans in attendance as the Phoenix celebrated its alumni weekend.
Northeastern's JaMiya Braxton led all scorers with 21 points, including 19 in the first half. She was joined in double figures by Derin Erdogan and Ariana Webb, who scored 11 and 10, respectively.
With the win, the Huskies improved to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in CAA play. Elon fell to 4-13 and 0-6 against league opponents.
THE RUNDOWN
- After Northeastern scored the first three points of the game, the Phoenix scored six of the next eight to go up 6-5. That proved to be Elon's last lead as the Huskies went on an 8-0 run to seize control of the game. Northeastern extended its lead to 11 points late in the first quarter, but the Phoenix finished the period on a high note, with Kamryn Doty finding Ajia James for a buzzer-beating layup that cut the deficit to 24-15.
- Elon's hopes of building any momentum off the buzzer-beater were dashed as the Huskies opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to go up 31-15. The Phoenix pulled within 14 points twice over the next two minutes, but Northeastern finished the half with a 12-2 run and entered the break with a 45-21 lead.
- The third quarter proved to be Elon's best defensively, as it held the Huskies to just six points, including two in the first 7:08. The Phoenix, however, couldn't muster enough offense to make a significant dent in the deficit, scoring 11 points to end the quarter trailing 51-32.
- Elon pulled within 15 points twice in the fourth quarter – the second time on Preston's 3-pointer that secured her double-double with 1:21 left – but it couldn't get any closer.
