ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team lost to Northeastern on Sunday, as the Huskies defeated the Phoenix 3-1 at Schar Center.
Elon 1, Northeastern 3 (25-20, 18-25, 22-25, 25-27)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon brought the momentum to start the match going ahead 7-1 early in the first set on the Huskies. Northeastern responded by winning 13 of the next 20 points to tie the set at 14-14. It was back-and-forth until Elon went on a 4-0 run fueled by a Sydney Love kill, back-to-back blocks from Lindsey Harris and Lily Barker and a Northeastern ball handling error to put the Phoenix ahead 21-17. The Huskies got within three but that is as close as they would get, as a kill from Cameron Lanier closed out the first set 25-20.
- The Phoenix again raced out to a quick 5-1 lead to start the second set. However, the Huskies battled back, going on a 6-1 run to take the lead 7-6. It was back-and-forth between both teams until Northeastern went on an 8-1 run to take the lead 18-11. They would keep that lead the rest of the set before eventually winning set two 25-18.
- Northeastern started strong in the third set, pulling ahead 10-6. The Phoenix fought back winning four of the next six points thanks to kills from Harris, a pair of kills from Clara LaRue and a Huskies error to cut the lead to two. Northeastern kept at least a two-point lead from there, going on to win the third set 25-22.
- Elon was on top to start the fourth set and kept the lead 13-10 midway through the set. The Huskies responded tying the score at 13-13 but the Phoenix went on a 3-1 run fueled by kills from LaRue and Barker along with a block from Caroline Berlekamp and Lanier to pull ahead 16-14. However, Northeastern won five of the next six points to go up one at 19-17. Elon again tied the score at 19-19 with a Northeastern service error and a Harris kill. Down 24-20, the Phoenix saved four match points tying the set at 24 all. Elon would go ahead 25-24 but two kills and an Elon attacking error saw Northeastern win the match 27-25.
NOTES AND STATS
FROM COACH TENDLER
"Came out strong in the first set again today; loved the way we were able to close it out. Our middles had a good weekend. It is nice to see those connections get better. Loved the battle at the end of the fourth to try to take it to a fifth set. It was great to see so many of our volleyball alumnae back on campus this weekend. Thank you all for coming back and being supportive!"
