Phoenix Drops Match Against William & Mary In Four Sets

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Elon University volleyball team lost to William & Mary on Saturday, as the Tribe defeated the Phoenix 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Phoenix raced out to a quick 9-4 lead early in the opening set. William & Mary got within five at 12-7 but Elon went on a 13-8 run and kills from Sydney Love and Cameron Lanier closed out the first set with the Phoenix winning 25-15. 
  • Down 7-2 in the second set, Elon went on an 8-3 run to tie the score. The Tribe retook the lead at 13-11 and led the rest of the way. A late 5-0 run gave William & Mary its largest advantage of the frame, as the Tribe took the set 25-15.  
  • The Tribe got off to a strong start in the third set, leading 10-4. However, Elon won eight of the next 11 points to get within one. William & Mary led the rest of the way, eventually winning the set 25-17. 
  • Elon went ahead 7-3 in the fourth, but William & Mary chipped away at the deficit throughout the set and eventually captured the lead late at 19-18. From there, the Phoenix only scored four more points and the Tribe clinched the set and match 25-22. 
NOTES 
  • Cameron Lanier and Sydney Love paced the Phoenix with 11 kills apiece followed by Lindsey Harris who tallied a career-high 10 kills. 
  • Jessica Parker continued to lead the team with 22 assists, her fourth consecutive game with 20 plus assists. Ericka Link followed with 19 assists and led the Phoenix in aces with two.  
  • Jordan Gower recorded a team-high 18 digs followed by Caroline Doyle with eight and Lanier with six.  
  • Caroline Berlekamp, Love and Harris led with four blocks while Lanier recorded three.  
  • Elon as a team outpaced the Tribe in kills (48-47) and assists (45-41).

"We got off to another great start today. We had good rhythm offensively and defended well. Once we got pushed, it took us too long to push back.  We need to be more consistent tomorrow to get a different outcome." 
  
UP NEXT 
The maroon and gold will return to Kaplan Arena tomorrow to face the Tribe at 2 p.m.
