Lauren McCauley found the back of the net with just three seconds left to secure a point for the Elon Phoenix (2-9-5) against the Campbell Camels (4-5-7). With the goal, the Phoenix eliminated Campbell from CAA Tournament contention.
McCauley netted the final goal from a corner with the assist from
Gabby Hoschek. The Phoenix would outshoot the Camels 10-9 with five shots coming on target. The tie gives the Phoenix another positive result on the road and their first in CAA play this season.
How It Happened
- The first ten minutes saw a number of possession changes in the midfield but no real chances for either team.
- The Camels picked up a pair of fouls in the Phoenix attacking half with Elon continuing to press Campbell.
- Rachel Buckle registered the first shot of the game, but it was blocked away by the Fighting Camel defense.
- Grace Gelhaus would produce the first and only shot on goal for either side in the 19th minute, but it was saved by JLo Varada.
- The two would continue to battle with possession throughout the rest of the first half with Elon registering a majority of the first half possession.
- McKenna Dalfonso would register her first save of the game in the 52nd, saving a shot on target from Olivia Neal.
- Dalfonso would be called into duty again with a save in the in the 68th minute with a shot from the foot of Natalie Darling.
- Elon would produce their best two chances up to the 80th minute when a shot from Kennedy Jones glanced the fingertips of Varada, nearly giving the Phoenix the late lead.
- Another shot on target would come from the head of Katie Lowe. The ball was destined for the bottom right corner, but the shot would be cleared off the line by Kaleigh Backlund.
- The Camels would earn a penalty in the 89th minute off a foul from Lowe in the box. Amber Liston would convert the penalty to give the Camels the lead.
- With just under 20 seconds, the Phoenix would win a corner kick. Hoschek would swing it into the box, the ball would take a deflection and it found the feet of McCauley would fired it into the top-right corner with just under four seconds left to play.
- Campbell would fire a shot from the halfway line, but it would land short of the goal, giving Elon the point.
Notes and Stats
- Elon now leads the all-time series with Campbell is 7-3-1.
- Lauren McCauley netted her second goal of the season in the draw. This was McCauley's first goal for the Phoenix since she netted her first career goal against Howard.
- Gabby Hoschek registered her third assist on the season, making her the third Phoenix to secure three assists this season.
- Five Phoenix outfield players played all 90 minutes in the draw with Lydia Totten, Grace Gelhaus, Katie Lowe, Kennedy Jones and Gabby Hoschek playing the full 90.
- The draw gives the Phoenix six points on the season.
- This is the latest goal scored in a match for the Phoenix this season and in the Division I era.
