Volleyball Cruises to Victory Over Hampton On Sunday

ELON, N.C.  The Elon University volleyball team beat Hampton in straight sets Sunday afternoon to earn its second straight CAA win.

HOW IT HAPPENED     
  • It was back-and-forth to start the first set. With the score tied 7-7, Elon won three straight points thanks to a pair of kills from Cameron Lanier and Lindsey Harris along with an ace from Jordan Gower. The Phoenix would then win eight of the next 10 points to pull ahead 18-10. The Lady Pirates fought back and won four straight points to get within four but that is as close as they got. Elon went on a 7-4 run and a kill from Lanier would close out the first set 25-18.  
  • The Phoenix continued its momentum into the second set, as Elon took a quick 11-8 lead. The maroon and gold won six straight points credited to an ace from Caroline Doyle, a block from Lily Barker and Harris, a pair of Hampton errors and kills from Love and Barker. The Phoenix went ahead 20-10 to gain its largest lead of the afternoon and from there the team's offense was unstoppable. Harris would add two more kills and a solo block to win the second set 25-15.  
  • The third set followed a similar pattern to the first set as both teams went point-for-point. Tied at 7-7, the Phoenix won four straight points thanks to kills from Caroline Berlekamp and Harris along with back-to-back aces from Gower to go ahead 11-7. From there, Elon won nine of the next 15 points to extend their lead even more at 20-13. Elon would win five of the next six points and Lanier kill would win the set and match for the maroon and gold 25-14. 
NOTES 
  • Sydney Love and Cameron Lanier paced the Phoenix in kills with 10 a piece. Lindsey Harris also recorded five kills. 
  • Jordan Gower and Caroline Doyle led the team in aces with three. Gower also had a team-high 12 digs.  
  • Jessica Parker continued to lead the way in assists with 26. The freshman now has six straight matches with 20-plus assists. Parker also recorded two aces and six digs.  
  • Caroline Berlekamp was a force at the net, tallying a team-high four blocks followed by Lanier with three and Love with two.  
  • As a team, Elon dominated in all categories outpacing the Lady Pirates in kills (38-22), aces (11-2), blocks (8-5), assists (36-19) and digs (33-24).

UP NEXT 
The maroon and gold travels to face defending four-time CAA Champions Towson on Nov. 4-5. Saturday's matchup is set for a 6 p.m. start and Sunday's match will begin at 2 p.m.
