Tar Heels Earn Victory Over Phoenix in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Elon University men's soccer team fell on the road, 2-0, at North Carolina on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Dorrance Field.

The loss dropped the Phoenix's record to 1-6-2 on the year while North Carolina improved to 5-0-4 on the season.

The Rundown
The Phoenix played a solid opening half versus the Tar Heels. Elon ended the first stanza with a 4-2 advantage in shots while both teams had a shot on goal.

Elon came out on the attack early against North Carolina, getting a pair of shots off along with a corner kick in the first four minutes of the contest. The Phoenix however could not get through the Tar Heel defense as the match remained scoreless.

In the 17th minute, the Phoenix received its second corner kick of the match. Franc Gamiz Quer got a head off the set piece, but his try went high of the goal.

Almost seven minutes later, the Phoenix had its first shot on goal via an attempt by Jack Dolk. Dolk made a run down the right side while being able to free himself from the defender. The senior's attempt was stopped by the keeper as the Phoenix and Tar Heels remained scoreless after one period.

The Phoenix came out aggressive again in the second half with Scott Vatne getting a shot just two minutes into the session, but the junior's try went wide. Elon was able to earn another set piece opportunity in the 58th minute on a corner kick that eventually found the foot of Myson Darden. Darden took a contested shot that was eventually stopped by the keeper.

The Tar Heels broke through with the first goal of the match on a penalty kick in the 65th minute. Quenzi Huerman took the stop that was deflected by netminder Tomasz Wroblewski, but the ball was still able to get through for the first goal of the game.

Elon nearly leveled the match in the 75th minute. The Phoenix drew another corner that was sent into the near post to Luca Erhardt. Erhardt was able to get a great touch on the ball, but UNC was able to make the save.

As the Phoenix continued to push numbers up forward, the Tar Heels added a late goal with under a minute left. That put the match out of reach for the Phoenix as UNC took the 2-0 win.

Notes
• The Tar Heels held a slight 9-8 advantage in shots and shots on target, 4-3. The Phoenix edged North Carolina in corners 5-4.
• The Phoenix fell to 1-15-1 all-time against its intrastate rival. Tuesday was also the first trip for the maroon and gold to Chapel Hill since the 2008 season.
