Women’s Golf Closes Fall Season With Impressive Win

ELON, N.C. A stellar showing throughout the Elon University women's golf team's lineup helped the Phoenix close out its fall season with a victory.

Elon took home the trophy at the Terrier Intercollegiate on Oct. 24 for its third team win in the last two seasons. All five Elon players competing in the event – Annabelle Ackroyd, Lotte Fox, Apple Ngamwong, Ashley Lafontaine and Annie Wu – finished in the top 25.

"It's a good way to end the [fall] season," Ackroyd said. "Everybody played their part and we came together. It was awesome."

After finishing sixth as a team in its first fall event, Elon reeled off four straight top-five results, including a runner-up finish at the Elon Invitational and a third-place finish at the Red Bandanna Intercollegiate in addition to the win.

This is the third straight fall season Elon has won an event as a team and the third fall win in the Phoenix in the last two seasons. Fox said it was good to see everyone playing well at the same time to close out the fall.

"All of us have just been working really hard and it was really good to see that it came to light and it came together for us in the end," Fox said.

During Monday's first round, Fox made a hole-in-one on the 148-yard par-3 15th hole at Carolina Country Club. It was the fourth lifetime ace for Fox and the second for Elon this fall, as Lafontaine also carded a hole-in-one at the Elon Invitational.

"There was a breeze in my face, so with a front pin, I clubbed up and choked down on my seven iron," Fox said. "It had no curve at all. It was the purest shot I think I've hit in a long time. It bounced and just rolled in. I knew as soon as I hit it, it was going to be close, at least a birdie, and it just rolled in."

While Fox's ace was Elon's highlight of the week, Ackroyd continued her consistent run of form. With a third-place result, Ackroyd finished the fall season with three top-fives and has now been inside the top-20 in 13 of her last 14 tournaments dating back to last fall.

"I've been playing really good golf for the past year and a half, so it's just nice to keep that up," Ackroyd said.

The Phoenix returned all but two players from last year's team that finished third at the CAA Championship, the program's best result at the event since 2015. Fox said the camaraderie among this year's team has been beneficial and expects it to continue into the spring.

"We all know each other, we're all familiar," Fox said. "We all know what helps us get hyped up in the morning, ready for a round. Just knowing each other as players has really helped and it'll only help us more in the spring."
