Caleb Curtain was named a second team All-American, while
Marco Patierno,
Brandon Tyson and
Jack Berkowitz earned Freshman All-America status as Phil Steele announced his All-Conference and All-America teams. In total, eight Elon football players were named all-conference as well.
Curtain was named a second team All-American and first team All-CAA defensive back. He led Elon with 80 tackles during the 2023 season, recording 6.5 for loss and 4.5 sacks. He also had a team-best four interceptions to go with six pass break-ups and two fumble recoveries. Curtain opened the season with a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown against Wake Forest and had at least 10 tackles in three games. He had a career-best 12 stops at Villanova. He added interceptions against North Carolina A&T, Monmouth and Richmond as well as the Wake Forest game. He recovered fumbles in back-to-back contests against Villanova and Monmouth. Curtain had at least four tackles in every game in 2023.
Patierno was named a first team Freshman All-American as a linebacker after finishing the 2023 season with 68 tackles and had at least three in every game. He added 5.0 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and scored a defensive touchdown in Elon's 51-14 win over Hampton to close the regular season. In Elon's 14-6 win over then-No. 5 William & Mary, Patierno recorded a career-high 11 tackles and 1.5 for loss. In the team's 33-27 win over another No. 5 ranked team in Delaware, he had six tackles, a TFL and a fourth quarter fumble recovery that sealed the victory.
Tyson was named second team Freshman All-American at linebacker, finishing with 73 tackles, 9.0 for loss. He had at least three tackles in every game, including a career-best 14 at Villanova. He had 11 tackles at Hampton and finished each of those games with 2.0 tackles for loss. Tyson posted two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery, along with two quarterback hurries. He had six consecutive games with at least 0.5 tackle for loss.
Berkowitz had to fill big shoes in replacing All-American kicker
Skyler Davis and he did so with a tremendous freshman campaign, being named second team Freshman All-America and third team All-CAA. He was 12-of-15 on field goals and finished the year by making his last six in a row. He went 4-for-4 in Elon's 33-27 win at then-No. 5 Delaware, earning CAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week honors. He kicked a career-long 44-yarder in that victory.
Along with Curtain,
Jaidyn Denis was named first team All-CAA at defensive back. He had 40 tackles, 27 of which were solo, adding 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. He had three interceptions, eight pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. In his most dominant outing of the season, Denis had 10 tackles at Gardner-Webb, forcing two fumbles and recovering one as well. He had 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass break-up. He had an interception in each of Elon's win over ranked opponents, doing so against William & Mary and Delaware. He added another pick-off against North Carolina A&T.
Johncarlos Miller II was named second team all-conference by Phil Steele after setting Elon's single game, single season and career receiving yards FCS records by a tight end in 2023. He had a career-high 101 receiving yards in the Phoenix's win at then-No. 5 Delaware and finished the year with 453 receiving yards, as well as 658 for his career. He ranks sixth in the nation for receiving yards per game by a tight end and caught touchdown passes in each of the final four games of the year. Over the course of his final five games of 2023, he had 16 receptions for 324 yards and he had three touchdown catches of longer than 50 yards.
Marvin Pearson earned second team all-conference honors on the defensive line. Through the regular season, he was tied for the most pressures in the country among all FCS players, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). Also according to PFF, he had the most hurries in FCS football through the regular season. Pearson led Elon with 11.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He had one of his best games against the toughest of competition, recording seven tackles, 3.0 for loss, and a sack against Wake Forest. He finished the season with 4.5 tackles for loss over the final two games.
Jalen Hampton was named fourth team running back and ranked second in the CAA with 880 rushing yards through the regular season and third with 80.0 rushing yards per game. He twice ran for more than 150 yards in a game in CAA play and had seven games this year of 74+ rushing yards. Five of his six touchdowns came during CAA play. PFF ranks Hampton No. 15 in FCS in yards after contact per rushing attempt.
Chandler Brayboy earned fourth team recognition at wide receiver, leading the team with 589 receiving yards. He ranks eighth in the country at 19.6 yards per reception and is also fourth in the CAA in kick returns at 26.9 yards per return. He had a career-best 121 receiving yards in the win at then-No. 5 Delaware and had 109 receiving yards in another top five win against then-No. 5 William & Mary.
Bo Sanders was a fifth team defensive back after finishing the 2023 season with 79 tackles and at least three in all 11 games. He had two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown in the final game of the season against Hampton. His 10 tackles at Campbell were a season-high. Sanders also ranked No. 3 in the CAA in punt return average at 7.8 per return.
