Elon Wins Fifth Straight With 12-1 Win Over Monmouth

West Long Branch, N.J. - The Elon University baseball team (12-7, 4-1 CAA) defeated the Monmouth Hawks (7-8, 1-4 CAA) Saturday afternoon, 12-1, to earn a fifth straight victory. The win also secures the fourth straight weekend series victory and Elon's fourth straight win in the CAA.

Following his two-homer day, freshman Ryan Sprock took the mound for the Phoenix and silenced the Monmouth bats. Sprock threw six innings, giving up no runs, walking just one and striking out seven Hawks.

Charlie Granatell and James Broderick both contributed three RBI in the Phoenix victory. Granatell finished 3-for-5 with a double while Broderick finished 2-for-5 and scored two runs. Tanner Holliman continued to swing a hot bat, clubbing another homer, his second in as many days and fifth in CAA play.

Elon's winning streak is the longest in the conference at five games and has the Phoenix positioned in a tie for first in the Colonial Athletic Association standings with UNCW and College of Charleston at 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cole Reynolds got things going for the offense early. The junior notched his first career triple to score Adam Berry and put the Phoenix on the board first in the top of the first.
  • Following Reynolds' triple, Tanner Holliman stepped to the plate and launched his fifth home run in the last seven days to extend Elon's lead to three.
  • The Phoenix would extend their lead in the top of the third with two doubles from Charlie Granatell and Luke Stephenson, with the designated hitter's two-bagger scoring Granatell.
  • James Broderick added to the Phoenix lead with the bases loaded and two outs. The former Wake Forest Demon Deacon delivered a single to right field that produced two more Phoenix runs.
  • Elon would get a fantastic performance on the mound from freshman two-way player Ryan Sprock. Sprock would limit any Monmouth attack, only surrendering five singles in his six innings of work.
  • The Phoenix gave Sprock more support in the top of the fifth. Following a leadoff double by Holliman, Broderick singled home another run for his third RBI of the day. Granatell would knock home two more runs with a bases loaded single to increase the Phoenix lead to 9-0.
  • Parker Haskin scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to give the Phoenix their third consecutive game with double digit runs.
  • Elon would score their final run of the game in the top of the eighth with Charlie Granatell gaining another RBI single to his tally.
  • Monmouth answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly, and the Phoenix bullpen took care of the rest of the outing with the final tally ending 12-1 in favor of Elon.

  • Tanner Holliman continued his hot streak against CAA opponents. Holliman has clubbed five home runs in the last week and now has six on the season to lead the club.
