Towson, Md. – Seeded No. 11, the Elon University women's basketball team built a 16-point second-half lead over No. 6 seed Stony Brook, but the Seawolves used a late third-quarter run to close the deficit and eventually win the game 54-51 Thursday evening in the CAA Tournament second round. Elon's season comes to an end with a record of 9-21. Stony Brook improves to 18-12 and will face No. 3 seed Northeastern Friday in the CAA Tournament quarterfinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon and Stony Brook battled back-and-forth early with neither team able to capture a lead larger than two points. The two teams went into the first media timeout tied at 8-8 as four different Elon players made field goals.
- After Ajia James knocked down a three-pointer for an 11-10 Elon lead, Stony Brook made the first run of the game with three consecutive field goals. Bria Harmon dropped in two free-throws and the Seawolves led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter.
- Kamryn Doty quickly tied the score with a three-pointer on the first possession of the second quarter and Lenaejha Evans' pull-up jumper from 17-feet put Elon ahead 20-19. James followed with her second three-ball of the game to give the Phoenix its largest lead at 23-19.
- Evonna McGill and Chloe Williams scored inside to extend Elon's lead to six at 27-21 with 5:32 to go. But those would be the final Phoenix points of the quarter. The Elon defense, though, held the Seawolves to just one basket the rest of the period and the Phoenix took a 27-23 lead into the break.
- Evans scored the first bucket of the second half on a long jumper with the shot clock running down and then followed it up with a floater to give Elon the 31-23 advantage. Her step-back jumper minutes later put the Phoenix ahead 35-25, forcing Stony Brook to burn a timeout following the first double-digit lead of the contest.
- Coming out of the timeout, James took over. She knocked down her third three-pointer of the game and then completed a traditional three-point play as Elon went ahead 41-25.
- Over the next three-and-a-half minutes, Stony Brook put together its most explosive offensive rally to that point with a 13-0 run that cut the deficit to three. The game went to the fourth quarter with Elon clinging to a 41-38 lead.
- The score didn't budge for almost three minutes to start the fourth quarter until Chloe Williams drove for a lay-up to get the lead back to five. Stony Brook answered with a basket and the Phoenix held a 43-40 lead going into the final media timeout.
- Stony Brook tied the game with 3:57 to go on a traditional three-point play, but Harmon answered with a leaning jumper on the next possession to give Elon the lead again.
- The Seawolves split two free-throws on the next possession and then forced a turnover. Stony Brook scored on a lay-up on the ensuing trip down the floor for the 46-45 lead.
- Stony Brook made a lay-up with 60 seconds left to go ahead 48-45 and the Seawolves added a free-throw with 41.2 seconds to play.
- Doty knocked down a three-pointer with 13.8 seconds to play following a McGill offensive rebound to bring Elon within two. The Phoenix sent Stony Brook to the line with 12.7 seconds to go and the Seawolves made both.
- With 5.8 seconds left, Doty was fouled attempting a three-pointer and she made all three free-throws to make it 52-51.
- Stony Brook was fouled with 4.9 seconds left, making both free-throws. Elon's last second three-point attempt came up short to close the game.
STATS AND NOTES
- Elon outshot Stony Brook for the game, holding the Seawolves to 29 percent from the field and making 44 percent of its shots. Stony Brook was also 2-of-21 from three-point range. But Stony Brook was able to generate 21 more shot attempts and 15 more free-throw attempts by forcing 23 Elon turnovers and grabbing 17 offensive rebounds.
- Ajia James led Elon with 12 points, making 3-of-4 three-pointers. Lenaejha Evans added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
- Kamryn Doty finished with nine points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Evonna McGill added six points, three rebounds and two blocked shots.
- Elon's bench outscored Stony Brook 18-2 and the Phoenix had six blocked shots.
- Stony Brook improved to 2-0 in the all-time series against Elon.
