Men’s Tennis Beats Monmouth To Reach Second Straight CAA Championship Match

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – For the second straight season, the Elon University men's tennis team is heading to the Colonial Athletic Association championship match, as the No. 3 seeded Phoenix defeated No. 7 Monmouth 4-2 on Saturday. The match was contested outdoors at William & Mary's Mackesy Tennis Center.

Elon rallied after dropping the doubles point, winning four of five completed singles contests to clinch the victory. For the second straight match, Nicholas Campbell secured the winning point for the Phoenix. 
 
With the win, Elon is now 15-8 on the season while Monmouth finishes its campaign with an 18-7 record. 
 
THE RUNDOWN
  • Monmouth won at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to take the doubles point. Nicholas Campbell and Daniel Martin won at the No. 1 spot, but the Hawks clinched doubles with the win at No. 3. 
  • Freshman Veljko Krstic picked up his 16th victory of the season on Court 3 with a 6-2, 6-3 result against Monmouth's Victor Castro. He has now won 11 of his last 12 completed matches. 
  • With a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 spot against Christof Zeiler, Ben Zipay put the Phoenix ahead 2-1. The win was Zipay's 12th on the season and his ninth at the No. 6 position. 
  • Martin stretched Elon's lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Niels Van Noord on Court 1. The junior has a team-high 17 wins on the season, all at the No. 1 spot. 
  • For the second straight day, Campbell clinched the match for Elon. He won a back-and-forth opening set 7-5 on Court 2 against Dmitry Bezborodov before cruising to a 6-1 second-set victory. The senior is now 5-0 in singles and 7-1 across doubles and singles in the last two seasons at the CAA Tournament. 
  • Oskar Antinheimo came from a break behind on Court 5 and won his opening set against Gabriel Busato in a tiebreak. Campbell clinched the match for Elon before Antinheimo could finish. 
  • This was the first time this season Elon won a match after losing the doubles point. 
 
UP NEXT
  • Elon will face No. 1 UNC Wilmington in the championship match tomorrow at 2 p.m. 
  • The two teams played last year in the championship match when the tournament was played at Elon. The Seahawks won 4-2.
  • UNCW defeated Drexel 4-1 in the semifinals today after dropping the doubles point. The Seahawks started their tournament with a 4-0 win against Hofstra in the quarterfinals on Friday. 
  • The Seahawks enter the championship match with a 16-7 record on the season. They are 5-0 against CAA competition this season. 
  • The all-time series between the teams is tied 7-7 entering Sunday's match. Elon is 1-2 against the Seahawks in the CAA Tournament, with the win coming in the 2019 championship match. 
  • Five Seahawks players have double-digit singles victories. The Seahawks are 68-37 in completed singles contests on the season. 
  • UNCW is led by head coach Mait DuBois, who is in his 16th season with the program. The Seahawks are the two-time defending CAA champions.
