Team Captains Named For 2023 Elon Football Season

Elon, N.C. – Chandler Brayboy, Bo Sanders, Dylan Tucker and Jabril Williams have been named captains for the 2023 football season, as announced by Head Coach Tony Trisciani.

"Like most football programs across the country, we have a lot of players returning for an extra season due to the additional 'COVID year' of eligibility," Trisciani said. "We had 11 different players receive at least ten votes for captain from their peers. That tells me that our football team does not lack leadership."

A redshirt junior, Brayboy enters his fifth year at Elon as the team's top returning wide receiver, and a dual-threat in special teams as a returner and gunner. He enters the year with 76 career receptions for 1,092 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2022, he had 28 catches for 475 yards and three scores. He has averaged 17.4 yards on 24 career kick returns but averaged 24.8 yards last year. He also has 17 career special teams tackles and a fumble recovery. Brayboy has played in 33 career games.

Sanders, a senior, played in all 12 games, starting 11 times, a year ago as a defensive back. He had a career-high 69 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss in 2022, to go with a sack, six passes defended and a fumble recovery. He had his first career interception in Elon's dramatic come-from-behind victory at nationally ranked William & Mary. Sanders has 125 career tackles, 7.5 for loss.

Tucker, a redshirt sophomore, missed the 2022 season due to injury but started eight games in 2021. He finished that campaign with 35 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss. He had two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, two quarterback hurries and six pass break-ups. He also returned a fumble 43 yards for a touchdown in Elon's win over Rhode Island. Tucker enters the 2023 season with 50 career tackles, 4.0 for loss, and nine passes defended.

A redshirt junior, Williams has been one of Elon's most consistent and dominant offensive lineman during his time with the Phoenix. He was a third team Phil Steele Freshman All-American in 2021 and earned third team All-CAA honors last year. He was part of a line that helped pave the way for the offense to rush for at least 120 yards on 10 occasions after doing so once the previous season. Williams played the fourth-most snaps at right guard among all FCS players who played in 12 or fewer games, according to ProFootballFocus.

"Chandler, Bo, Dylan and Jabril are great representatives of Elon University and of our football program," Trisciani said. "They are talented athletes who have the ability to elevate the level of play around them with their competitiveness and winning habits.

"Being a team captain is an honor and privilege that comes with great responsibility. Captains are stabilizing forces, players who give their all to the team, and aren't afraid to take a tough stance when it comes to maintaining the standards and expectations of our football program."

The Elon Football team went 8-4 in 2022 and 6-2 in CAA Football play, ending the season ranked No. 17 in the country. The team earned a bid to the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2018 and defeated three ranked teams during the regular season, including handing William & Mary its only loss of the regular season. Elon went a perfect 5-0 at home and ended 2022 with a six-game home unbeaten streak, the longest in Rhodes Stadium history.
