How It Happened
- The Phoenix took control early against the Terriers, starting a side that nearly remained unchanged from the side that put two past the Howard Bison on Thursday. A pacey front three of freshmen Lauren McCauley and Grace Gelhaus accompanied by junior Kelly Degnan.
- Elon pilled on the pressure early with the midfield pairing of Buckle and Hoschek providing a significant pressing effort throughout the first half. The initial pressure would pay off following a Terrier turnover.
- For the second straight game, an opponent handball in the box would give the Phoenix a penalty kick, and this time it was Rachel Buckle's turn to take center stage. The sophomore calmly slotted the penalty in the bottom right corner to give the Phoenix the early 1-0 lead.
- The pressure would continue from the Phoenix and the runs of freshman Grace Gelhaus would continue as well. The freshman from Woodstock, Ct. continuously made runs down the left wing, putting balls into the box at will.
- In the 31st minute, the crossing paid off. A Gelhaus cross found the head of Gabby Hoschek who squeezed between two Wofford defenders to put it home for the second goal of the half and Hoschek's third goal in her first two collegiate games.
- The Phoenix would enter the half outshooting the Terriers 11-1 with almost 60% possession.
- Both teams would make goalkeeper changes going into the second half with Elon bringing on an all-conference keeper while Wofford replaced theirs.
- The result was all but wrapped up when Buckle collected her third point of the night finding fellow sophomore Ashlee Brehio on the edge of the 18-yard box and following a quick move to her right, bent one in passed the diving goalkeeper. This was Brehio's seventh career Phoenix goal and first of the season.
- The second half became a back-and-forth affair following Brehio's goal with Wofford now bringing the pressure to the Phoenix. After registering a lone shot in the first half, the Terriers had several opportunities to break through the wall of Dalfonso but could not.
- Kennedy Jones would be booked with a yellow card in the 73rd minute, but the minor offense would bear not imminent outcome on the game as the Phoenix would claim their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory.
