ELON, N.C. – The Elon University cross country programs began the 2023 campaign with its annual home meet, the Elon Opener, on Friday evening, Sept. 1, at the Elon Cross Country Course.
In the women's 4K race, the Phoenix finished third overall with 80 points behind Duke (15) and High Point (45). In the men's 6K run, the Blue Devils also scored 15 points to win the team title ahead of High Point, who posted 65 points. East Carolina was third with 91 points while host Elon was fourth with 99 points.
Women's Recap
• Elon was led by a couple of first-year runners in
Quinn Smith and
Kate Buerger. Smith was 13
th overall in the race with her time of 13:56.8. Buerger was the second Phoenix runner to cross the line with a time of 14:05.4 in 16
th.
• Another rookie,
Hannah Weber, was 18
th overall with a time of 14:10.7.
Julia Bell was the fourth runner to finish for Elon as the sophomore posted a time of 14:17.1 in 20
th.

Sarah Petitjean was 22
nd overall as the fifth Phoenix runner to round out the team scores. The sophomore posted a time of 14:25.1
• The Phoenix competed in the race without the majority of its top returning scorers from the CAA Championships. Bell was the only returning runner who competed and raced at the CAAs last fall.

Zane Jackson was the leader for the maroon and gold men with his time of 18:17.1 in 22
nd.
• Sophomore
Evan Taylor was second for Elon with his time of 18:36.2 in 28
th while another sophomore,
Nate Mars, was the third runner to cross the line for the maroon and gold with his time of 18:43.4 in 31
st.

rd overall with a time of 18:45.9 while first-year
Joe Lavelle was the fifth runner for the Phoenix with a time of 18:50.5.
