Men’s Tennis Heads South For Charlotte Invitational

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team will compete in its second fall tournament this weekend at the Charlotte Invitational. Charlotte is hosting the three-day event, which will begin Friday and end Sunday. 
 
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
  • Elon's matches will begin at 1 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. The Phoenix will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday. 
  • The other teams participating in the Invitational are Charlotte, Georgia Southern and UNC Asheville. 
  • Live scoring and video will not be provided.
  • Results will be posted at the conclusion of play each day. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon opened its fall schedule by hosting the Elon Invitational at the Jimmy Powell Tennis center last weekend.
  • Veljko Krstic and Juan Sengariz both advanced to singles finals before both matches were abandoned due to rain. Sengariz also advanced to a doubles final alongside partner Ben Zipay
  • All seven Elon players who competed in singles won at least one match, with Krstic, Sengariz, Ben Zipay and Jake Pettingell earning multiple victories.
  • Sengariz and freshman Alonso Roca both earned their first singles wins as members of the Phoenix. 
  • In doubles, the team of Daniel Martin and Dylan Heap also picked up one victory. 
 
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
  • Elon is coming off a 15-9 season in the spring and its second consecutive appearance in the CAA championship match. 
  • Headlining Elon's returners from last season is Daniel Martin, who earned CAA Player of The Year and CAA Tournament MVP honors in the spring. Martin posted an 18-6 singles record in 2023 with all 18 wins coming at the No. 1 spot. 
  • Elon also returns reigning CAA Rookie of the Year Veljko Krstic, who racked up 16 singles victories in his freshman season. 
  • Back for his senior season is Ben Zipay, who took home Third Team All-CAA Doubles honors in 2023. Zipay also won 12 singles contests.
  • The other returners for the Phoenix are sophomores Oskar Antinheimo, who took home a CAA Player of the Week and two CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors as a freshman, and Jake Pettingell.
  • Elon welcomes three newcomers in 2023 – Dylan HeapJuan Sengariz and Alonso Roca. Heap is a graduate student who played last season at Rice and Sengariz joins the Phoenix after spending the last two seasons at Anderson. Roca is Elon's lone freshman this season. 
  • Elon is led by head coach Michael Leonard, who is in his 20th season with the program.
