Men’s Soccer Falls to No. 19 Hofstra

ELON, N.C. – No. 19 Hofstra broke through with three goals in the second half as the Pride took a 3-0 decision over the Elon University men's soccer team on Saturday night, Sept. 30 at Rudd Field in a CAA contest.

Elon dropped to 1-5-2 overall on the year while falling to 0-3-1 in CAA play. Hofstra extended its unbeaten streak to nine while moving to 8-1-2 on the season and 2-0-2 in league play.

The Rundown
Elon had a great opening half in its CAA championship final rematch versus the Pride. The Phoenix had the first four shots of the match within the first 13 minutes. Calle Edelstam had a couple of looks during that stretch including one shot from the top of the box that was blocked in the eighth minute followed by the Phoenix's first shot on goal in the 10th minute after a counterattack that was saved by the keeper.

The Phoenix had another good look at a goal just inside the 25th minute. Scott Vatne found himself open at the top right corner of the box after a free kick and sent a strike aimed towards the upper 90 of the goal. The ball just sailed out of frame to give the ball back to the Pride on a goal kick.

Elon outshot the Pride, 7-5, in the opening frame and drew three corner kicks compared to one for Hofstra. However, the Phoenix could not find the evasive first goal as both teams went into the break scoreless.

Minutes into the second stanza, Hofstra would break the scoring stalemate. The Pride drew a foul inside the box to set up for a penalty kick in the 46th minute. Eliot Goldthorp drove a hard shot to the right in which keeper Tomasz Wroblewski was able to get a hand on it, but the momentum was too much for the save as Hofstra took a 1-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, Hofstra doubled its lead as Ryan Carmichael took a feed from Goldthorp and beat the Phoenix defense to put the Pride ahead 2-0.

In the 64th minute, the Phoenix nearly got on the board to make it a one-goal match. Myson Darden was able to force a Hofstra turnover with the ball eventually finding Edelstam on a through ball from Vatne just inside the 18-yard box. The junior fired a strike towards the keeper, who was able to knock it down before it was cleared away.

The Pride put the match out of reach as Carmichael scored his second goal of the night in the 71st minute. The striker was able to earn the brace off another feed from Goldthorp to put Elon in a 3-0 deficit which would settle as the final score.

Notes
• Hofstra ended the match with a 17-11 advantage on shots including a 12-5 vantage in the second half. Six shots were on frame for the Pride compared to three for Elon.
• The Pride improved to 9-1-1 versus the Phoenix in a series dating back to 2014. Hofstra also remains undefeated at Rudd Field with a 6-0 ledger.
