Volleyball Unable to Survive Five Set Battle with Northeastern

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team fell to Northeastern in five sets on Saturday night at Schar Center.

Elon 2, Northeastern 3 (23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 19-25, 11-15)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a back-and-forth start to the match, a 4-1 run in the middle of the opening set fueled by a kill from Keira Kasten, an ace from Cameron Lanier and a block from Caroline Berlekamp and Sydney Love gave Elon a 16-13 lead. However, the Huskies battled back, winning 10 of the next 17 points to tie the set at 23-23. An Elon error and Northeastern kill closed out the first set 25-23 in favor of the Huskies.
  • Elon brought the heat to start the second set, gaining a quick 11-5 lead. The Huskies answered with a 2-0 run, but the Phoenix quickly responded with kills from Berlekamp, Lindsey Harris and two from Kasten. With the score 19-13 in favor of the maroon and gold, a pair of kills from Lanier and Love, along with an ace from Ericka Link, gave Elon the cushion it needed to eventually close out the second set 25-15.
  • The third set was a battle all the way to the midpoint of the set. Tied at 11, the Phoenix raced out to a 15-11 lead behind a pair of Northeastern errors and kills from Love, Kasten and Lily Barker. The Huskies responded by winning six of the next seven points to go up 17-16. They would not keep the lead as Elon came back on a 9-4 run to win the third set 25-21.
  • Northeastern raced out to a quick lead in the fourth set, building a strong 19-11 advantage through the frame. The Phoenix went on a late 6-0 run to cut the lead to five at 23-18. The Huskies would eventually close out the set 25-19.
  • The Phoenix took an early 4-1 lead in the fifth set, but Northeastern stormed back winning five of the next six points to take a 6-5 lead. Kills from Barker and Kasten put Elon back in the lead 7-6. From there, the Huskies went on a 7-4 run to gain a late 14-10 lead. Elon saved a match point with a Lanier block, but a Northeastern kill clinched the set and match 15-11.

FROM COACH TENDLER
"That was a tough first set to lose after playing so well. Service errors really hurt us.  Loved how strong we bounced back in the second and third set and then we lost the momentum very early in the fourth.  We are playing at a much higher level than we were earlier in the season, just need to find some consistency."

UP NEXT
Elon and Northeastern return to Schar Center tomorrow, Oct. 1 for another 3 p.m. CAA match.
