Elon’s Strong Defense Not Enough In A Battle At North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. – It was a battle between Triad rivals as the Elon University women's basketball team (7-13, 3-4) fell 56-42 to North Carolina A&T (12-6, 6-1) on Sunday afternoon.

Ajia James and Maya Johnson led the Phoenix scoring nine points each. Johnson also paced Elon on the glass tying her career-high with 11 boards. 

THE RUNDOWN
  • Elon got on the board first with a layup from Maraja Pass. North Carolina A&T would fight back and eventually pull ahead 10-7. The Phoenix closed the opening quarter on an 8-4 run to take a 15-14 advantage.
  • The Aggies went on a 7-2 run to gain the lead at 21-17. With 1:13 left in the half, an and one three-point play from Maya Johnson got the Phoenix within one at 21-20 to enter the half. 
  • A Johnson layup opened the third quarter giving Elon the lead back at 22-21. From there, North Carolina A&T went on a 18-10 run to pull ahead 39-31 lead after three quarters of play. 
  • Elon opened the fourth quarter with strong defense forcing four quick turnovers while going on a 5-0 run to get within three at 39-36. The Phoenix would not get any closer as the Aggies went on a 17-6 run to seal a 56-42 victory.   
NOTES
  • Iycez Adams, Maya Johnson, Diamond Monroe, Maraja Pass and Vanessa Taylor started for the Phoenix.
  • Ajia James and Johnson led the team in scoring with nine points apiece. Johnson went 4-for-10 from the field while James went 2-for-9 and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
  • Johnson tied her career-high with 11 rebounds, seven of which were offensive.
  • Pass led the team in assists with three while four Phoenix players recorded two steals.
  • The Phoenix outrebounded the Aggies in the first half 22-12 while forcing nine turnovers. 
  • Elon outnumbered North Carolina A&T in offensive rebounds (18-6), steals (8-6) and bench points (17-10).
  • In every conference game, the Phoenix have forced 13 or more turnovers. 
  • The maroon and gold continued to hold their opponents to under 65 points in league play.
UP NEXT
  • Elon returns home next weekend to host Northeastern on Friday, Feb. 2 for Education Day before welcoming Campbell Sunday, Feb. 4. Tipoff for Friday is set for 11 a.m. while Sunday's contest will begin at 1 p.m.
