Elon Falls In Five-Set Thriller To Campbell

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team was defeated in a hard-fought five-set match against Campbell on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Campbell came out to a 7-4 lead over the Phoenix before Elon quickly cut the lead to one at 7-6. From there, the Lady Camels went on a 6-1 run to extend their lead to six at 13-7. Campbell kept momentum eventually going up seven at 20-13. Elon could not overcome the deficit and fell in set one 25-17.
  • The teams went back and forth to open set two with no team leading by more than two. With the score knotted at 7-7, Campbell went on a 5-2 run pulling ahead 12-9 midway through the frame. Elon got back within one at 13-12, but a 5-0 run from the Lady Camels saw them up six at 18-12. Elon put together a 5-0 run of their own to get back within one at 18-17 but would only rally off two more points as another 5-0 run for Campbell won set two 25-19.
  • Elon sparked momentum to open the third set winning eight straight points. Campbell won five of the next six points to get within four at 9-5. Elon carried energy winning six consecutive points to gain their first double-digit lead of the set at 15-5. The teams went back and forth but with Elon up 17-9, another 6-0 run saw the Phoenix in front 23-9 late in the frame. The Lady Camels rallied off two more points but a kill from Sydney Love kept the Phoenix alive winning set three 25-11.
  • The fourth set saw a similar start as the third as Elon came out to a strong 11-0 lead. Campbell got within eight at 13-5 but back-to-back Lady Camels errors and a kill from Cameron Lanier put Elon back up 11 at 16-5. The teams traded points before a 4-0 run from the Phoenix gave them set point at 24-10. Campbell saved two set points but a service error gave Elon set four 25-12, forcing a fifth set.
  • Campbell jumped out to a 7-1 lead to start set five. With the score at 9-2 in favor of the Lady Camels, Elon won four straight points thanks to a kill from Keira Kasten, a Campbell error, an ace from Caroline Doyle and a block from Caroline Berlekamp got Elon within three at 9-6. The Lady Camels went on a 4-0 run to gain a seven-point advantage at 13-6. Elon kept the game alive with a block from Berlekamp and Lanier but ultimately fell short as Campbell took set five 15-7.
NOTES 
  • Cameron Lanier paced Elon with 11 kills while Sydney Love added nine. This is Lanier's ninth match this season reaching double-digit kills.
  • Annabelle Schall matched her career-high and Casey Brower added a career-high five aces apiece.
  • Schall also recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 10 digs and a team-high 20 assists and 10 digs.
  • Caroline Doyle recorded 20 digs, her third match this season with 20 or more digs.
  • Caroline Berlekamp tallied a career-high seven blocks while Catherine Rucker and Lanier followed with five each.
  • As a team, Elon outnumbered Campbell in blocks (12-5), kills (41-40), assists (38-37), and aces (14-13).

  • The maroon and gold return to Schar Center tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. rematch against the Lady Camels.
