Elon Falls In Five-Set Battle At Stony Brook

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team fell in a five-set battle with Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon.

Elon 2, Stony Brook 3 (26-24, 15-25, 21-25, 25-22, 4-15)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Phoenix came out to a strong 8-2 start in set one over the Seawolves. The teams traded points but a 4-0 run thanks to kills from Lindsey Harris and Anna Sewell, an Ericka Link ace, and a Stony Brook error gave Elon a double-digit lead at 16-6. The Seawolves went on an 8-2 run to cut the Phoenix lead to four at 18-14 late in the frame. Two straight points from the Phoenix put them back up six before a 3-0 run from the Seawolves forced an Elon timeout at 20-17. Out of the break, a 7-4 run from Stony Brook knotted the score at 24-24. A kill from Lindsey Harris gave Elon set point and a Seawolves error saw the Phoenix take set one 26-24.
  • Stony Brook led 8-2 early in set two and went on to extend their lead to eight at 16-8 midway through the frame. Elon struggled to gain momentum and the Seawolves eventually led by double-digits at 20-10. The teams traded points, but the Phoenix could not overcome the deficit, falling 25-15 in set two.
  • Early in set three, Elon controlled the momentum, leading 5-3. The Seawolves quickly tied the score at 5-5 before the teams traded points. With the score at 8-7 in favor of the Phoenix, Elon went on a 3-0 run thanks to kills from Cameron Lanier and Harris and a Stony Brook error to go up 10-7. The Phoenix extended their advantage to four at 15-11, but Stony Brook responded winning four straight points to knot the score at 15-15, followed by a 4-1 run to gain a three-point lead at 19-16. Again, the teams went back and forth but the deficit was too much for the Phoenix as Stony Brook took set three 25-21.
  • Elon led 5-1 early in set four and later put together a 5-0 run to go ahead 11-4. Stony Brook fought back going on an 8-3 run to only trail two at 14-12 midway through the set. The teams went back and forth until back-to-back Phoenix blocks put them on top 22-17. The Seawolves went on a 4-1 run to cut the Elon lead to two at 23-21 but would only rally off one more point as a Love kill ended set four with the Phoenix on top 25-22.
  • Elon fell 15-4 in set five to the Seawolves.
