Johnson Leads Blocking, Elon Falls In Four Sets To Towson

ELON, N.C. – Sophomore middle blocker, Kyla Johnson matched her career-high in blocks with six in the team's four-set loss to Towson on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Towson got out to an 8-3 lead in set one to force a Phoenix timeout. Out of the break, the Tigers went on a 4-1 run to gain an eight-point lead at 12-4. A kill from Clara LaRue and an error from the Tigers got Elon within six, but a 7-0 run from Towson gave them a double-digit lead at 19-6. The Phoenix won five of the next eight points but could not overcome the deficit, falling in set one 25-12.
  • Elon called an early timeout in set two with the Tigers leading 5-1. Towson won seven of the next nine points to extend their advantage to 12-3. Later, the Phoenix returned within seven at 15-8 thanks to kills from LaRue and a block from Kyla Johnson and Sydney Love. The Tigers then went on a 6-2 run to pull ahead 21-9. The teams traded points and a kill from Johnson and a Towson error saw Elon down 10 at 23-13. Elon saved one set point before a Towson kill ended set two in their favor, 25-14.
  • The teams went back and forth to start set three, but four straight Phoenix points put them out in front 10-6. Johnson kept the momentum for Elon with a block and back-to-back kills to force a Tigers timeout at 13-8. Out of the break, Towson went on an 8-2 run to go up one at 16-15. It was back and forth until a LaRue kill and a block from Johnson and Cameron Lanier gave Elon a two-point lead at 21-19 to force Towson's final timeout. The Tigers knotted the score at 22-22 but back-to-back kills from Lanier and a Towson error gave Elon set three 25-22.
  • Elon came out to a 5-2 start in set four. Towson won eight of the next 10 points to pull ahead 10-6. Kills from LaRue and Love got Elon back within two, but a 4-0 run from the Tigers put them back in front, 14-8. Later, five straight points from the Phoenix cut the Towson advantage to two at 16-14. The teams traded points with a block from Catherine Rucker and Love along with a LaRue kill saw the Phoenix trail by two at 21-19. Four straight points from the Tigers ended the set and match 25-19.
