Hampton, Va. – The Elon University football team held a brief second half lead but Hampton scored the final 21 points to defeat the Phoenix, 41-21, Saturday. The game was Homecoming for Hampton and snapped Elon's two-game road win streak.
With the win, Hampton improves to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in CAA play. Elon falls to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hampton jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after a muffed snap allowed the Pirates to convert on a three-yard scoring drive. The host team added a 32-yard field goal later in the period for a 10-0 lead after one quarter.
- Elon got in the scoring column with a short drive of its own after Jake Louro recovered a fumble at the six-yard line. Matthew Downing found Chandler Brayboy on a five-yard pass that brought Elon within three at 10-7.
- Hampton answered back with a touchdown to go on top 17-7, but Elon found the offensive rhythm again. Downing hit Brayboy on back-to-back passes of 51 and 23 yards. Rushawn Baker then scored on a one-yard plunge to make it 17-14.
- Hampton connected on a 33-yard field goal just before the half for a 20-14 lead.
- To open the second half, Elon forced a three-and-out and the Phoenix quickly took the lead. On the first play from scrimmage, Downing found Onuma Dieke wide open for a 70-yard touchdown and a 21-20 lead.
- Hampton, though, took the lead back for good on its next drive and added a pair of fourth quarter insurance touchdowns.
STATS AND NOTES
- Hampton ran 80 plays, compared to just 52 for Elon.
- Matthew Downing was 7-of-14 for 181 yards passing and two touchdowns.
- Chandler Brayboy had three catches for 79 yards and Onuma Dieke caught two passes for 86 yards.
- Khalil Baker led Elon with 12 tackles and Nick Veloz added nine.
- Khamari Brown had 2.5 tackles for loss, while Veloz and Cazeem Moore added 2.0 tackles for loss each.
- Hampton had 381 yards of offense and Elon finished with 168.
- Elon recorded 11 tackles for loss in the game.
- Hampton was +1 on turnovers and had 36:17 time of possession.
- Jeff Yurk punted the ball nine times for 51.6 yards, including five of at least 50 yards and five inside the 20. He had a long of 68 yards.
