Elon Drops Second Match To Towson Sunday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team fell in straight sets to Towson on Sunday afternoon.      
 

Elon 0, Towson 3 (23-25, 23-25, 20-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Elon fell behind 6-1 early in set one, but out of a timeout, the Phoenix went on a 5-0 run to knot the score at 6-6. Elon then won three of the next four points thanks to a kill from Cameron Lanier, an Ericka Link ace, and a block from Caroline Berlekamp and Lindsey Harris to go up 9-7. Towson responded with an 8-1 run to gain a 15-10 advantage. Towson maintained a five-point lead up 21-16 before Elon went on a 5-1 run to cut the lead to one at 22-21. The Phoenix then knotted the score at 23-23 with kills from Berlekamp and Clara LaRue but two straight points from the Tigers ended set one 25-23 in favor of Towson.
  • The teams went back and forth to start set two. With the score at 6-3 in favor of the Tigers, Elon went on a 4-1 run thanks to kills from Harris and LaRue along with a Towson error and a block from Kyla Johnson and Harris to tie the score at 7-7. An Annabelle Schall ace later gave the Phoenix a one-point lead at 10-9, but the Tigers went on a 5-1 run to pull ahead 14-11. The teams traded points and with Elon down five at 20-15 the team won three straight points to force a Towson timeout at 20-18. Out of the break, Elon tied the score 21-21, but the Tigers went on a 4-2 run to close set two 25-23.
  • With the score tied at 4-4 early in set three, Towson went on a 4-1 run to gain an 8-5 lead. Elon fought to get back within one at 9-8, but Towson quickly stretched their lead to five at 13-8 and eventually led 17-10. The Phoenix found momentum, going on a 6-1 run to get back within two at 18-16. The teams traded points, and Elon could not overcome the deficit, falling 25-20 in set three.


NOTES 

  • Clara LaRue paced the Phoenix with 10 kills while Cameron Lanier recorded nine.
  • Annabelle Scall reached double-digit assists for the 23rd consecutive match this season with 18.
  • Ericka Link led the team with two aces while Schall and LaRue each added one.
  • Caroline Berlekamp recorded a team-high six blocks followed by Lindsey Harris who tallied four.
  • Caroline Doyle led Elon with 10 digs while Harris and Abigal Sparkman added five apiece.


UP NEXT 

  • The maroon and gold travel west on I-40 to take Piedmont Triad rival North Carolina A&T. Saturday's match begins at 5:00 p.m. while Sunday's matchup features a 3:00 p.m. start.
