A Season-High Hitting Percentage Leads Volleyball To Victory Over Hampton

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team posted their highest hitting percentage of the season with a .350 in Thursday night's sweep over Hampton.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Phoenix got out to a quick 6-0 lead thanks to back-to-back aces from Caroline Berlekamp and a Sydney Love kill. Later in the set, three straight points from Elon extended their lead to six at 14-8. The maroon and gold won five of the next six points thanks to kills from Lindsey Harris and Love and a block from Love and Catherine Rucker to pull ahead 19-10. The Lady Pirates went on a 3-0 run to cut the Elon lead to six at 19-13. From there, Elon only allowed two more Hampton points and three straight kills from the Phoenix ended set one with Elon winning 25-15.
  •  The teams traded points to start the second set. With the score tied at 5-5, Elon went on a 3-1 run to go up 8-6, but Hampton quickly regained the lead earning four straight points going up 10-8. The Phoenix won eight of the next 11 points to lead by three at 16-13 late in the frame. Again, the teams went back and forth, and with the score at 21-19 in favor of the Phoenix, Elon won four consecutive points to take set two 25-19.  
  • Neither team led by more than one to open set three until a 3-0 run from the Phoenix saw them ahead 9-6. From there, it was a battle of 3-0 runs as each team traded three consecutive points twice. With the score at 16-14, Elon compiled a 7-3 run that put them out in front 23-17. A Lady Pirate service error gave Elon set point and a block from Harris and Rucker closed the set and match with the Phoenix sweeping Hampton 25-18.
NOTES 
  • Cameron Lanier led the Phoenix with 10 kills, matching her season-high hitting percentage with a .500. Caroline Berlekamp and Sydney Love followed with seven kills each.
  • Berlekamp and Catherine Rucker paced the team at the net with four blocks apiece. Love added three while Lindsey Harris and Lanier tallied two each.
  • Annabelle Schall recorded 20 assists, her ninth match this season with 20 or more assists.
  • Caroline Doyle finished with a team-high seven digs followed by Abigail Sparkman who tallied six.
  • Berlekamp also led the team in service aces with two with Schall and Doyle also recording an ace apiece.
UP NEXT 
  • The maroon and gold return to Holland Hall tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. matchup against the Lady Pirates.
