Philadelphia, Pa.- After 80 minutes of team defense and scoring chances, the Elon Phoenix (9-1-1, 4-1) found a crucial counterattacking goal from
Ashlee Brehio to lift Elon over the Drexel Dragons (3-6-3, 1-2-2). Brehio's second goal of the season gave Elon the 1-0 win over Drexel and just the second win over Drexel in the program's history.
Elon's defense cut off the Dragon attack at the knees Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix backline allowed just one shot on goal and limited Drexel to just six shots in the game.
How It Happened
- The Phoenix started fast with a new starting XI configuration with a new three up front. Jess Beck made her first career start and fired two shots within just two minutes.
- Elon applied pressure with four corner kicks in the first seven minutes which led to two more opportunities from Kennedy Jones and Jess Beck with Jones nearly giving the Phoenix the lead.
- Lauren McCauley found a chance in the 21st minute but the attempt was saved by the Drexel keeper.
- Drexel and Elon played a competitive match to start the second half with both teams spending time with possession to start the second half.
- Neither team could find a shot on target for the first 35 minutes in the second half until the Phoenix took a corner kick from the Dragons down the field. Jenna Abousaab found Brehio with a simple pass and Brehio did the rest with a first-time finish.
- Drexel found their first shot on goal with just under 100 seconds left but it was easily handled by Katie Bisgrove and the Phoenix saw out the win.
