Elon Falls to William & Mary on Senior Day

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team fell on Senior Day in four sets to William & Mary on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • In the first set, William & Mary jumped out to an early 5-3 lead, but Clara LaRue's back-to-back kills helped Elon tie it up at 5-5. The teams traded points, and Elon briefly held a 9-8 advantage. However, the Tribe responded with a 4-0 run, taking a 12-9 lead. William & Mary then went on a 7-1 stretch, extending their lead to 19-10. Elon fought back with two points, but the Tribe continued their momentum, winning five straight points to reach set point at 24-12. Despite the Phoenix saving five set points, William & Mary closed out the set 25-17.
  • The Tribe jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set two. However, Elon responded with a 3-1 run to close the gap to 6-4. The teams traded points for a while, but Elon made a big push with a 7-1 run, taking their first lead of the set at 13-10. Elon then won four of the next five points to extend their lead to 17-11. The Tribe fought back with a 6-2 run, pulling within one at 19-18. Elon quickly regained control, responding with a 4-1 run to take a 23-19 lead. The Phoenix allowed just two more points, finishing the set 25-21 to even the match at 1-1.
  • Elon trailed 6-2 in set three before falling behind 11-3. The Phoenix battled back, winning three of the next four points to narrow the gap to 12-6. The teams traded points, but back-to-back Tribe points saw them in front 16-9. William & Mary followed with a 5-1 run gaining their first double-digit lead of the set at 21-11. Elon fought back with a 5-2 run of their own, but the deficit was too much as the Tribe took set three 25-16.
  • The Tribe led 7-1 to start set four and force and Elon timeout. After the break, the Phoenix responded with a 5-1 run to close the gap to just two points at 8-6. However, the Tribe quickly regained control, answering with a 5-1 run of their own to extend their lead back to six at 13-7. Elon compiled a 5-2 run and got within four at 16-12. The Tribe responded winning five of the next six points to go up 21-13. Elon only rallied off two more points and fell 25-15 to the Tribe.
NOTES  UP NEXT 
  • The maroon and gold travel to Delaware for their final CAA regular season weekend on November 15-16. Both matches are set to begin at 6 p.m.
